Hey guys I know there must be some of you out there with one of these...I am in possession of a Remington model 8 that my grandfather asked me to clean. It is very old with only four serial numbers and a lot of wear. I am quite accustom to the cleaning and minor repair of guns so what happened to the model 8 is all the more frustrating to me. As I was cleaning it, the action locked up! I had removed the barrel and the bolt. I had disassembled the bolt, cleaned it, and reassembled it. When I put the bolt back in the receiver, I pulled back on the charging handle and the bolt locked up with a loud clunk. I thought “oh no big deal it is caught on the bolt catch”. But it is not. The bolt release on the left side of the receiver can freely move as can the bolt stop/catch. The bolt has about 1mm of play forward and backward and that is it. The bolt lugs were oriented at about 8 and 2 when it locked back. I took a screw driver and rotated them to 12 and 6 after the bolt locked back, but that did nothing. Now I cant rotate them back. I thought and still do (kind of) that the gun was suppose lock back because anyone trying to clean the gun would invariably pull the bolt all the way back with the barrel removed. So I am asking if you have had this happen? Is it normal? And how do I free the bolt without destroying this great old gun. It seems like I am missing something obvious. Thanks for your help and time. ak007 Email me too. |

It's been a while since I took mine apart to detail clean. Can you put the rest of it together ? barrel back on etc. the mag follower will lock it back if you don't have any rounds in it. did you try depressing the mag follower ? IIRC the barrel recoils within the action. you migh have to have the bbl installed to function it properly. |
