I have read and heard that the FBI and others have an idea that 35-50 serial killers are "operating" in the U.S. alone. I think this is a realtivly low number, since there is a shitload of murders all over the country that in fact go unaccounted for.

I just got done watching Dexter on Showtime on demand, What is the hives opion on this matter? Think a "good" serial killer that took the lives of "bad" people would be a beneficial thing for this days society?

So in other words, a "vigilante"?  Yes, if he was taking out "bad people".  But bad people according to who, him?

If he took out child rapists and drug dealers, I'd donate $20 to buy him more ammo.

Retribution and vengeance are natural human emotions and if someone goes around killing drug dealers and gang members then I honestly have no problem with it. I understand the moral issues associated with it but if someone is willing to take that amount of risk with their own life to rid the world of some really bad people then kudos to them. I mean, really, this is what the Punisher does. This is what Batman does. And if you dont support Batman then you're anti-american and a communist, there I said it.

I'd be curious if there's anything to actually back up that statement.  Has anyone associated with the FBI ever gone on the record and said that?  It just sounds like when people say you're only using 10% of your brain, etc.  Just a number out of thin air that's meaningless but keeps being repeated.

On another note, I just finished the book that the Dexter tv show was based on, it's not bad.  Kind of a fresh take on that genre.

Nice thread we have here.  Here's a little information on the BTK serial killer:

Rader bound, tortured, and killed his victims. Rader would strangle his victims until they lost consciousness, then let them revive, then strangle them again. He would repeat the pattern over and over again, forcing them to experience near-death, becoming sexually aroused at the sight of their struggles. Finally, Rader would strangle them to death and masturbate to ejaculation into an article of their clothing, usually underwear

Hmmm... guess he doesn't qualify as a 'good' serial killer.

What a stupid fucking thread.

I think that the integrety of our justice system(dont start on me) is important enough to uphold by prohibiting such things as best we can.  Vigilanty justice is appealing to our need for revenge and retaliation, our primal instincts of hatred.  that isnt what we are founded on and truthfully, that is more what you might see in a tyrannical regime than a nation of free rule..  I say a type like Dexter is just as bad as the bad people he kills..
