Looking for a decent desktop PC for under 1K. Main use is internet and home office applications, little gaming. I do play MS flight sim once in a while. I don't need any peripherals. Just bought a new monitor, laser keyboard and mouse and a new printer. Building one is not in the tea leaves. What say you??? |

CyberPC is okay I guess. Dell is okay. Really, just get a Mac  No seriously, get a Mac.  You can get a Mac mini for well under $1k and it had a Core 2 Duo processor, dvd burner, etc. All without the hassle of windows - no anti-virus to worry about, customer service speaks English and is excellent, operating system is UNIX-based so it's secure and stable, etc. |
It doesn't have to do with 'being an idiot'. It has to do with not wanting to waste time with stuff like anti-virus programs, driver issues, .dll issues, activex, spyware, etc. I'm just throwing the suggestion out there because he's not building a computer, and because I think everyone should try a *nix-based computer at least once. OS X happens to be the most intuitive version of *nix available at the present time. And the Mac hardware is generally good, customer service is good, etc. You buy a Dell and it may be cheaper, but the customer service is Indians who can't speak English, the parts are off-brand - you wind up with shitty PSU's and laptop batteries that explode, you don't get the installation CDs - so if you have to reformat and reinstall Windows, you're SOL, your computer comes loaded with bloatware (i.e. AOL, MusicMatch, and all of those other goodies), etc. I'm just saying - if he's never had a Mac before, and he's just using this computer for daily surfing and email, he should try it out and see what it's like to not have to worry about the 'hassle' that comes with a Windows PC. I don't think you could go wrong with a Hewlett-Packard. I have had good luck with mine, but I have an AMD processor instead of an Intel. I know many others who have had good luck with HPs as well. ETA: ben72227 is right, too. MACs have good hardware, and a nice, stable OS. |
