Hey guys,

Well after waiting pretty much a fucking year (excuse my frustration) the Feds finally want me to schedule an interview with them in order to further the citizenship process.

The problem is that I NEED to get my citizenship before the end of Spring next semester before Field Training or else I will have to stop taking ROTC, because in order to contract with the Air Force I MUST be a U.S Citizen despite having a Green Card.

So my question is how long will it take to get citizenship after the interview, which will be during Thanksgiving long break?

Have you completed your residency period?
Have you taken and passed a citizenship test?

Normally I say immigration lawyers are just scammers, but in your case maybe you could use one.  At least for a consultation.  Try to find a reputable one in your area, maybe with a big firm, not the guys that just try to fill out forms for people that are too stupid to fill them out themselves.

You'll do your "test" at the time of your interview.  After your interview, and succesful completion of the "test", don't expect thing to happen soon. took 8 months after my interview before the oath appointment.

Unfortunetly, you're not AD, so no help from the .mil, especially since you already began teh process on your own.  Too bad about mandatory cit for O's  Sometimes wanting to be an officer sucks

I say "test", because people seem to think it's a real test.  If it were, many Americans would fail it  basically, know what colors  are on the American flag, and who the president is, everything else you could pull outta your ass.

If it's coming from the government, it will take time.

Good luck on becoming a citizen

It used to be a real "Test".  It was always harder than most jr. high school kids could pass.

If you try to immigrate to Canada, you sit down and take a TEST.  You will be graded on history, language and writting skills in french and english.

Write your congressman and senators immidiately, they can expedite paperwork with State and Justice.

And sadly, when it comes to the test, what the government considers to be the "right" answer is sometimes not the historically correct answer.  Whoa to the poor soul that actually learns accurate American history.

I'd start running this through the military channels NOW. At the end of four years ROTC they might just say - well, you owe us, welcome to the enlisted ranks. I'd imagine that's not the route you want to go after ROTC.

Besides, you might hit on someone with enough clout to give the process a nudge.

I don't mean to be rude or rash in any way but do they even care?

My roommate wrote a letter to his rep asking for an expedited process for his Green Card and all he got back was a generic letter stating that his rep does not support Illegal Immigration.

BTW my roommate is a LEGAL alien.

Pssst. They don't. Finding someone with a direct connection is the way to go.

The current citizenship test questions are on-line here.

If this is "the" interview, be prepared to take that test. When I passed it (Atlanta office, a few years ago), I was told that I had passed and could schedule a ceremony within a few days But YMMV.

But it could also be a hearing or something of the sort about items in your N-400; or maybe their background investigation turned up something that they want to discuss with you. It all depends on what the letter that you got says.

ETA: Good luck! Yay citizenship

I had to wait about 4 months from the interview/test. this was 3 years ago so YMMV.

A friend of mine just took the oath a couple of weeks ago.  It was about 3 months from her interview/exam to the oath.  She was a regular civilian though.  You may look into getting your ROTC people to help out.  Write a letter you your Congressmen.

Took me about 14 months from time of application to going through the swearing in in Tampa.

ETA:  I had to clear my outstanding federal tax that I owed that was being paid back in installments before I could finalize the process, otherwise it would have been faster.

Will do that at the interview. Never thought about that, so thanks.

Talked with the Commanding officer of the AFROTC program. He said that I need citizenship by next February since that is when the slots for Field Training are allocated.

However he said that in the event I do not receive my citizenship in time they can send me to field training the following year.

They will find out with a congressional inquiry either to Department of Justice, Immigration and Naturalization service. Sometimes paperwork gets lost or misdirected, the gentleman in question HAS his residency ID is a legal resident, and paid his application and filing fees. Even though he is not yet a citizen Senators and Congressman do represent him, your roomate had no residency although he had no gren card I don't know what his status was.

You HAVE talked to your Det commander, right?

While there may be no official channel (as there is for AD) he may know some way to help you out...

Oh, and write your state's congressmen/senators... Wanting to become a US Citizen so that you can be an officer in the Air Force is something most would LOVE to be involved in moving forward...

Depends upon the Congress(person). I've discovered that we do have one that cares, and she's a Democrat(Nancy Boyda). I've been very impressed. Too bad she's a freshman.

Good luck to you. I know that dealing with the USCIS is not a walk in the park. It takes forever and if they want more papers from you, it makes it even longer.
Also your process will be longer or faster depending on your service center.
Let us know how it goes.
