If the U.S. military came across cost effective light saber technology, do you think it would ever be issued to our troops?  And if so, would only officers have access to it?  And if so, would Marine Non-Coms be issued it as well?  And if so, would it become the most feared battlefield weapon just off of WTF value?  And if so, would it revert all war tactics back to middle ages, with light jousting and light catapults and light arrows?

It would be widely issued just to cut through rebar and shit.

its old technology...hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side

lightsaber bayonet, FTW!

Cost effective?    Try anything at all.  It would be pretty awesome though!

Sure it would be.

You'd take it into battle riding on your flying pig, so the frozen pits of hell didn't give your feet frostbite.

Without the force, people wouldn't be able to block shots with it.  Meaning it would just be a very lethal close range weapon.  And we learned that long range weapons>close range weapons centuries ago.

It'd be more useful in welding and steel fabrication.

It would be the "light bayonet" used for entry work and melee combat.

Our troops would be looping off each other's limbs, and their own limbs in no time flat. One cannot merely wield a lightsaber without have a strong knowledge of The Force.

If they could design a laser guided lightsaber, why not just drop them on tanks, imagine carpet bombing with lightsabers spinning around it would be impossible to stop.

It would be more like a giant dayglow lightstick. Makes for something fun to aim for. Without Jedi skills (or lack there of based on how easily they were all killed off), you're instant target practice.

Whatever it was, it'd be banned from civilian use for sure.

Unless you used the force to push the lightsabers away from your tank/wookie.

Sabot rounds would be replaced with Light Tipped Anti-Tank

The lightsaber would be the most dangerous weapon to the operator ever invented. Theoretically (F spelling, it's late) it would have no weight. Try to swing a flashlight around without letting the beam cross a body part.

You would be asking to sever your own limb with that thing!!

YOU'LL PUT YOUR LIMB OUT!!!!

NOT FAIR, nobody said the force was involved, if that wer the case, Id run around blocking tank shells with my lightsaber, while cutting them in half.

You don't need to the force to use a light saber.

Good training to not lop off your limb is all that is needed.

Its a mechanical weapon-many non force folks used light sabers at some point in the 3 recent movies.

History channel talked about the technology required for such a device. It would take a massive leap in plasma technology, and the light blade would need to be something like 2 million degrees. Basically it would be too hot to even stand near the thing!!! It would still be fucking kick ass though!!!!!

If there's thing I could say about lightsabers, it'd be that cutting torches, battering rams, and breaching charges would disappear quickly.

"Ok, go get the battering ram out of the cruiser."
"Nevermind that."
*Turning on his lightsaber and cutting down the door before he finished his sentence.*
