I need to know what I can use against pits that will ABSOLUTELY stop it in its tracks.

Other than a gun or taser, is there anything else effective againstthem?  Spray? Cattle prod?

I would just shoot the mother f**ckers if I was threatened, but this i for someone I know that does not want to carry a gun and quite frankly, if they dont want to, they should not.

A machete is "less lethal" than a gun, but with a Pit your friend will have to time his swing just right.

how bout a baseball bat....I would assume however if you were attacked and you had your bat there would be nothing less lethal about that.

I made one do a U turn with some LE grade pepper spray one night.

I dont know what his intentions were, but he Immediately wanted to be somewhere else when he got a nose full!

Tell them use common sense.  Don't go near dangerous animals if they don't want to be armed.

Well, stray dogs are not predictable as to where/when you will see one.  She is a marathon runner and trains daily, sometimes running the full 26.whatever miles.  So common sense would be to route your run of 26.whatever miles to avoid an animal that may or may not be there.

Great Advice

Well, if she isn't willing to use the proper means to protect herself against an animal attack, she probably should find another route.

You are being very stingy with info and then jumping on people for not reading your mind.  Now that we know she is a a 50 year old marathon runner, you may get more relevant information.

Given all that I think martial arts is the best answer.  It will give a great off day workout.  She will not need to bring any additional gear running, or worry about finding and deploying a device in an instant with sweaty hands. For dogs I would suggest arts that concentrate on powerful kicks, like Tae Kwon Do.  The grappling arts would all be different with a dog, plus I'd rather deal with one at leg distance rather than head in arm.

I was very tired last night as I was posting, hence the stingy with info part.

You might consider reading Clint Smith's column in the august issue of GUNS magazine about mountain lion attacks. While the article isn't about dog attacks, the last couple of  sentences in the article are particularly applicable to this situation.

"Even here in lion country, my wife Heidi runs every day with her gun. Runner she is, a lion hasn't attacker her yet... at the local gym."

OC spray. I've generally found that demonstrating your dominance over them will cause most dogs to back down. Their bark is worse than their bite. Thats not to say that you shouldn't exercise caution around them til you figure out what their game is.

Yeah i've seen OC demenstrated on dogs as well, seems to annoy them enough. Of course you could always up it to a beanbag or rubber bullet rounds if they are really determined.

I have a gun carrying friend who loves riding his bicycle but detests the idea of shooting a dog.  After finally shooting an attacking dog while riding, he realized he was just going to have to quit riding his bike or accept shooting dogs.  He quit riding the bicycle.

Tell your friend to buy a treadmill or take some firearms safety classes and acquaint herself with a gun.  Besides, pit bulls aren't the only thing women encounter on long runs.  There are also mountain lions, rapists, hit & run drunks, the Gestapo, and Bigfoot.

You can't CAN'T KANT have your cake and eat it too.

Pepper foam works very well on large dogs....They just roll around on the ground for an hour trying to get it out of their facial fur.

Do not get me wrong, its not that she refuses to shot a dog, she just does not want to carry something as "heavy" as a gun on her runs, Her words.  I explained that there are light wieght alternatives, to no avail

She is a very nice person and has done many things for my wife and our family, but she is rather liberal, so even the thought of her getiing interested in defending herself is a shock and I am running with it.
