I have a 590A1 that I like very much. I have fired close to 1,500 (not a lot) rounds through it with no problems whatsoever. I like the Remington 870 as well, but the 590A1 gives you the most for your money IMO.

Get it in the the 20" tube with the toothpick attachment point... The ghostring sights are a nice addition as well, just add the rifle/pistolgrip stock ala Benelli and your all set.
For the price they're hard to beat, Only scattergun I've ever had more fun with was a custom built remington 870. |

I have the 590 Mariner (the one with the special marine-cote type finish) and it is flawless. Very smooth and accurate for a pump. Great gun for the money.

I own one. I put Mossberg ghost ring sights and a sling on it. It is a fine home defense and combat weapon. Fully loaded it holds 13-14 rounds including the four in the stock, depending on the size of the magnum loads.
Simple to use, extraordinarily effective with alomost any load and totally reliable. BTW, Mossberg says to make sure you don't use any strong solvents like Gun Scrubber to clean it. Tears up the finish. One thing though...it kicks like a Missouri mule with 3" magnums! Even with the integral rubber pad, you will have a big bruise after a few rounds. Nothing like the sound of that slide snicking into battery to put the fear of God into a burglar. Cliicck-Clicckk! Sort of distinct...and universally respected. Get one...you'll like it. [shotgun] |

[shotgun] I had a shotgun that did that also, even with the lightest loads. It was a Winchester Defender. I took the buttpad off and filled the stock hole with as much #6 shot as would fit.Took most of the recoil away even with the heaviest magnum loads. I never had to take the stock off after that, so I don't know what kind of mess it made in there. |

Get the Mossberg 590A1 (model# 50661) parkerized finish, ghostring sights, 8+1 capacity, speedfeed stock, and of course the "accessory" lug.

I LOVE my Mossberg 590A1 (not like that you sicko's!!!!!) It runs great. Comfortable to shoot even 3" Magnum 00 Buck. I added a Tac-Sling, Sure-Fire Forearm, Speed Feed pistol grip stock and a Side Saddle. It's the best scattergun for the money. I even bought another one. Especially as a "southpaw" with the top mounted safety. Three "must haves" on a 590:
1) Ghost Rings (that "orange blade of death" out front is AWESOME for quick sighting) 2) Side Saddle (it is SO worth the $25 and they look bad ass) 3) 20" barrel with the 8 round tube and bayo lug (Ever seen a shotgun with a bayonet on the end? Man they look fierce.... and for a close quarter, limited capacity weapon it makes the most sense of all) [shotgun] |

The 590 is the best pump gun that mossberg has made to date but for little more money you could get a mossberg 9200a1 and have an automatic with a lot less recoil and much faster followup shots.The "Junglegun"is next on my list of guns to buy just because my wife talks about missing my Benelli when she is home alone at night.The 9200a1 outperforms the Benelli by a fair margin and is about half the cost.If you must have a pump the 590 would be a fine one though.

I own a Mossberg 590A1 for home use and for patrol use. Mine is outfitted with the 16" barrel, ghostring sights, Speedfeed III stock, 6-round side saddle carrier, Surefire Flashlight Foregrip and a Blackhawk Ind. Swift Sling. All in all I think it is the best shotgun I have ever owned.

It depends entirely on what you want this shotgun for. I have one mainly because it was on sale at a ridiculously low price, and as a lefty I like the tang safety. If you handle and shoot other brands particularly Browning's BPS and Remington's 870 you will find that their actions are MUCH smoother and the fit and finish of the guns is noticeably better. The Mossberg will no doubt give years of reliable service. If low initial cost is your main concern - then look that way. If fit, finish, and build quality are paramount - look around before you buy.

GET IT!!! I have mine for about four years the first gun I bought. I have used it for everything! I was at a range where I was skeet shooting and there was a guy who had a $1,200 pump shot gun that he got all jazzed out for skeet shooting. Well I let him try my 590A1 and he said that it had a better action then his $1,200 shotgun.
Anyway I love my 590A1 and it is the last gun I'd ever sell because they are so versatile! |

Let's see, you can get a Mossy 590 with tons of options, such as bayo lug, ghost ring sights, speedfeed stock, high capacity mag tube standard, etc. OR, you can get a Rem. 870 for a couple hundred more, then spend $500 to get it to do 3/4 of what the Mossy will do stock. Smoother? Use it so save your arse and the quart of adrenaline rushing through your veins will cause you to not notice smooth or not smooth. Those who need a "smooth" pump should try lifting weights. Of course, just my opinion, and worth what you're paying for it. Did I mention mine is by my bed now, and I love it?
