Ok, so I'm 17, and I have a summer job at a grocery store as a bag boy/ "Utility Clerk" (they call it that so they can make me clean shit up too.) I hate it. Work a few nights a week til midnight, and almost as late the rest. Money's ok, cuz I get tips... i figure it comes out to about $8/hr (6/hr payed, the other $2 in tips).

I could get another job working at Schepel Buick/GMC/Hummer/Cadillac/Everycarever for $7/hr washing cars and moving them... Which I would enjoy a lot more, as some of my friends work there and the hours won't suck because they close at 9.
Only problem is that it's about a 30 minute drive to get there... right now I'm at about an 8 minute drive depending on traffic. With the price of gas... this could be kinda substantial. (I only get about 17mpg w/ my car... cuz i drive too fast.)
Schepel is more flexible with hours too, which would be good because I'm very busy during the school year (band, sports, etc)

So, hivemind. What say you? Take a $1-2/hr pay cut & longer commute to get a job I enjoy or stick it out at Grocery store??
Poll inbound. Here.

None of the above, you're not going to get ahead with a dead end job, sorry.

My suggestion,

Think of something unique and get working on that idea... You're only 17, I'm sure you're a smart individual...

Good luck...

I am a smart individual, 3.97 GPA, planning on a Chemical Engineering degree, but as of right now, there are not a lot of jobs available for 17 year olds that are not dead end jobs.

Even if it is a dead end job look for one that will help you get with people and get comfortable with people. Being a cleaning boy won't help you with people.

I stuck it out at a dead end job much like your own in high school, and am kinda glad I did.  I drove 4 miles, compared to 20+ to any other jobs.

Well... bagging I am forced to talk to people if I want tips, so I'll have more contact with people at my job now... but I've already been complimented by numerous (older) individuals that I'm good at talking to adults and can speak my mind clearly, so I don't know if I need to stick it out for that reason.

Get in ground floor at some chain store...work your way up, and own a few franchises

A cousin of mine started delivering for Dominoes, and now owns 12-15 of them

If you plan on being a chemical engineer, I suggest, work for a company in one of those fields, learn the trade with a plan to get ahead of the rest.

Think positively and being around people who are achievers, etc. Working a dead end job doesn't give you the opportunity to get ahead unless that "dead end job" directly correlates to what you plan in the future.

I voted before I read the post. Sorry.

Do not count tips as part of your salary. Simply because there is no guarantee that you'll see them.

I'd take the better hours, more consistent pay, and better job.

Getting home after midnight for 6 bucks an hour. F that.

I hate to break it to you, but I'll bet dollars to donuts that the man who owns 12-15 pizza shops is making quite a bit more than you will as a chemical engineer.  You may laugh at his occupation, but he laughs at your paycheck.

I've got two degrees (BS & MS) in mechanical engineering myself.  I recently opened a beer distributor and now sell alcohol for a living.  I'm pretty confident I'll be able to duplicate my engineering income with this business and more importantly, I'll never have to take any shit from some of the assholes I worked with in the past.

Look around and don't be so negative, I'm positive, they can hire you, under any capacity, all you have to do is find one and be persistent, tell them you are the right person for the job and willing to learn, hardworking, etc. Be creative in your reasoning for wanting the job, they will hire you.

Good luck.

You're 17, go for the car lot you'll love it.  I worked a job like that for a while when I was younger.

And don't pay any attention to the folks trying to offer you career advice.  This is a summer job and it seems like you already have a career in mind, just have fun.  As long as it pays the bills you have.

I'm sure it will pay the bills, car insurance + cell is $150/month, gas maybe $50-60...  other than that, it's just saved or used to go out with friends.

Also something else to consider. Right now I'm getting anywhere from 20-30 hours a week. At the car dealership I will get around 30, but probly not much less. I can also pretty much come and go as I please... at least that's what i've been told.

I would try and get that guaranteed because I have never heard of anyone buying a car during the dead of winter. I am just saying that so you don't get disappointed or in a spot during winter with no income. Maybe you will, but I would check on that.

take the close one, think how much more you will be making since you not spending gas to drive 30 minutes...
