Very cool. Be careful with those rattlers. I've seen the damage they can do first hand. They are also very fragile creatures that can easily be hurt with rough handling. I must say though that you look like you know what your doing.

I kept them for 20 years and have been catching them for even more.  I know what the venom does by subspecies and even local.  Never been bit.  The big red diamond rattlesnake above is packing about 6 lethal doses at that size.

In most places they are not protected, some places like CA have bag limits.  Only a few types of rattlesnakes are protected in some states.

Mountain Spring?  that in or close to Joshua Tree?

What no Mojave Greens?

I found a Gopher that long on a road at a Cub Scout family camp.  Unfortunately, a car had found it first, and secondly, Ma Danby wouldn't let me coil it up behind the door of the restroom.  Some people have no sense of humor.  She didn't mind the snakes at that camp though, we must have seen about half a dozen non-venomous varieties in and around the campsite.  Several rattlers in the near vicinity, so we had to be fairly watchful.

When you handle the rattlers, do you get sprayed often?

My son and I went to the Opp, AL snake roundup several years ago.  As each rattler was picked up by the handlers, they more often than not, sprayed.  The handlers said that was a normal defense mechanism and the reason the handlers picked the snakes up a good way from the spectators.

The horned lizards are my favorite reptiles.

We used to catch them in the back yard.  They had different temperaments, as I recall, depending on the color of their belly.   The red ones were mean as piss.

No, never had one do that.  But I have never handled the timber rattlesnakes/canebrakes that they have in AL.- at least not wild caught ones.  I have handled nearly every subspecies of rattlesnake that inhabits the western US and none of them does that in general.

I do remember showing a big northern pacific rattlesnake to folks back in HS biology.  The darn thing took a crap right then- it was hard to be serious after that.

I used to keep a lot of critters, but these days I have it pretty narrowed down.  I have a Mandaren ratsnake, a CA kingsnake, a pair of rosy boas, and 3 small turtles (and some fish).

Snakes, Rats, hampsters, these things are not pets. You may allow them into your house but they are not pets. If it can save your life it is a good pet. If it helps out somehow it is a good pet. These are not pets.
