Hello everybody! I have a friend who's considering donating their bone marrow to be on the registry if anyone needs it. However, they're concerned about pain that might occur during the procedure. Is that just a myth or is it really painful? The site says: "MYTH: Marrow donation is painful. FACT: Marrow donation procedures are done under general or regional anesthesia so the donor experiences no pain during the collection procedure." But rumor/legend is a powerful thing. |

here is the skinny.. i have actually been involved as a blood banker on a few of the BM recovery procedures. the typing is a simple blood draw. if and when a match occurs, further testing is going to be performed with another blood draw. after the go ahead is given and you have tested clean for communicable diseases, a surgery date is given. the ones i have seen, the donator is given a light general anesthetic during the procedure. recovery time and pain is minimal. the BM is preserved and tested for the patient in need. good luck. |
