I just got a lap top FINALLY and need to get a wireless router. They are pretty cheap now I was just wonder if certain brands are better than others or if there is any expertise you all have I may not know about when it comes to routers.

Thanks

I've had good luck with Linksys, Belkin and Hawking, with Linksys and Belkin as my favorites.

V V V -- D-Link too. Forgot them.

Linksys or Dlink. Take your pick. I'm partial to Linksys, because I like the radios a little more.

It six of one, half a dozen of the other until you get into enterprise gear (like Cisco Aironet, etc).

Linksys has good quality and easy setup, but make sure you use some kind of encryption on it. It's not that much harder to set up a little router encryption and it goes a long way to protect people from stealing your connection or worse, your info.

I'd stay away from DLink. I've had pretty bad luck with them, if you ever want to do more than plug it in and turn it on, and their support truely sucks.

Will there be instructions to do this encryption?

There's lots of aftermarket firmware available for the Linksys, which opens up a lot more features.

Ok, Dlink and linksys are the same (I disagree but that doent matter in this lesson)

so lets say dlink is number 6 and linksys is half a dozen which is how many? 6 thats right. so 6 and a half dozen would be the same. so 6 one way, or hald a dozen the other, it doesnt matter because they are the same.

No I realize the saying is stating that 6 and a half dozen are the same thing it's just a funny saying is all. I rather just say it's all the same regardless than that long complicated saying

I'm going to recommend D-Link over Linksys just for the simple fact that I could never get the remote administration to work with Linksys but I can with D-Link.

Other than that, they are both good brands.

It's assumed, since like 99% of the site is frequented by males.

I didn't read your board name.

Well, one thing I really needed was to leave my client PC's set up to obtain an IP address automatically, but force the router's DHCP to always assign the same IP address to the same MAC. You can also muck with the power output and stuff like that, although most of the features you'd never use. It's just nice to have the ability.

I've had good luck with anything Linksys, Netgear or D-Link.

D-Link has been my recent preference.

I've had good experiences with linksys and netgear.  DO NOT buy an Ativa (office depot brand) my dad got one and it is a POS.
