How many of you know what "points" on an ignition system are?

How many of you know how to adjust points?

Just curious as to how many of us younger than 40...(I'm 30) know anything about older vehicles. I am a classic car fan and have owned and driven cars from 1955 to 1970 for most of my life. However, I see few people in my generation who have taken an interest in these classics. I am wondering what will happen when all of the current Baby Boomer generation is dead and gone?

Screw points, I have a MSD billet distributor.

Damn its been a long time, I used to know how but probably couldn't anymore. I haven't had points on my car in like 4-5 years.

I'm 20 BTW.

I'm 30.  I know what they are, and how to adjust them.
How to get them right is a little trickier...
ETA - I'm a little concerned at how many people think it is abnormal to be curious and inventive.  I wonder if that's how it has always been?

I'm 33, I know how to clean and adjust them properly (even with a dwell meter).  I also know that dropping in a pertronix electronic module makes sense even on a mint classic ride, it is completely reversible and works way better when it rains.

Been dealing with points since I was 9 and my dad, who couldn't see worth a shit but wouldn't wear glasses, taught me how.  They are easy to deal with (book of matches and a screwdriver) and VERY cheap to replace (the points for my truck are about $4).

Don't get me wrong, HEI and CD ignitions have their place and are a vast improvement over points.  But points still work and, even if they get fucked up a little, you can make them work long enough to get home.  Tough to do when your HEI module or MSD box takes a shit.  BTDT.

I'm 26.

Match book cover.

Points ignition is effective, but in general it kinda sucks.

The suck

thank god for HEI

but i at least know what they are and given a few minutes could remember how to adjust them

Im 32

I would not be worried about lack of intrest as the baby boomers go tits up

have you seen the retro scene is far from dead and some would claim going back to its roots with the rat rod movement

except there are of course dumbasses payinf 10's of thousand for rat rods they think are cool

that could be built with 2-5K in parts

i does piss me off as these assholes are again pricing shit out of many peope's budgets

it happened with in the 1980s with muscle cars ,  90s with street rods and now  when rusted out dangerous hulks are bringing $15k on Ebay

37 and my first car and first motorcycle both had points. Always carried a spare and a condensor for the old H-D. The only time my points failed me was when they fused together. A ten minute fix tops.

33... and I've learned about points, but could'nt do shit with them without a refresher.

33, don't know anything about them other than I vaguely remember hearing something about them in junior high school shop class when we had to watch a movie about taking apart a lawnmower or something.

ETA:  I'm actually somewhat mechanically inclined also, I do almost all the work on our vehicles, but I'm completely unable to grasp electical/ignition stuff.

Know them well.  Ran my first car, a '74 Ranchero 500 w/ a 351 Cleveland, with an Accel Dual Points distributor.  Talk about a royal P.I.T.A. Even with locktite, those points were always loosening up on me.

ETA: I'm 37 by the way.

IMO there is nothing wrong with points..

My 1968 mustang has points..

I absolutely HATE those F*ING things.  I've been fortunate enough to weld a couple of them together on a road trip before.  Nothing like having the ignition cutting out till the arms can rip themselves loose and start working again

yep, I've owned 2 cars, 4 bikes and 1 boat that had points,

my 75 C20 w/454 has HEI though,

I've also got a B&S 3.5hp engine w/points driving a d/c generator.

Then they commented among themselves about how much knowledge would be lost when they died.

Points will protect your car from trains more than MSD?

On my next hot car (or truck, as it is turning out to be), it'll have an MSD.  But not on a daily driver.

I used to.  I don't have the manuals or feeler gauges anymore.  The way "classic" car prices have gone, I doubt that I'll ever have to worry about points again.

I turned 20 in May, very familiar with points.  I own a '70 Plymouth Satellite convertible (where my name comes from) a '71 and '73 Duster, and my dad owns a '70 Challenger R/T and '66 Coronet.  I've dealt with a points a bit
