why shouldn't one use ammo with steel cases. my buddy said he refuses to use it saying that it's not good for your rifle that he won't use anything but brass. just curious as to why. any input or links with info would be appreciated.

lots of rumors few facts. the steel in ammo is a softer steel, harder than brass but softer than the metal that the gun is made out of.

whatever, if you don't want to shoot it, fine. more for me, my guns like it just fine.

this is an old wives tale that's been put to bed on numerous occasions.

i shoot more steel cased ammo than anything else now, and i've never had any issues.

Seems like a silly concern when you think of the physical abuse given to your barrel everytime a bullet is fired.

Ive heard steel doesn't expand and make as good as a seal as brass does, thats why they have to add the lacquer  and shit to it.

If you start reloading, this would be a non-issue.

Shoots a little dirtier but that shouldn't be a problem w/ proper care.

Being that I have heard the arguments from both sides I decided to write manufacturers and ask them for their $0.02

Bushmaster said GO FOR IT

DPMS said NO PROBLEM

If you are worried... get the manufacturer of your rifle... write them a letter and ask them.. better yet... send an E mail and you will get an answer ricky tick.

Steel cases don't have as much spring-back as brass cases do, so after being fired and expanding to seal the chamber, they are more difficult to extract, which makes your extractor work harder and wears it out *sooner* (extractors wear out even with brass-cased ammo).  But keep things in perspective; extractors cost under $10.

it's a bushmaster A2 20". never heard of this really being a problem till today so i wanted some other opinions. another buddy ordered a thousand rounds and said he would give me half. just curious that's all. first friend who told me about it is getting into service rifle competion so maybe that has something to do with his opinion. thanks
