[ARCHIVED THREAD] - riding mower problem

this is a murry/ranch king 20 horse/46 cut. hydro drive. problem is: it will be running just fine, mowing great, then all of the sudden it will basically stop moving forward. blades are still turning and no problems with the engine. i found that if i disengage the blades and throttle down, it will move fairly well and i can increase the throttle and move along like it should. i then engaged the blade again and throttle back up and it just sits there. whats the deal? drive belt worn? or could it be in the pulleys?

Does it move if you just throttle down? Sounds like the drive belt is slipping or the tranny is going out.

I've got a 10 year old Craftsman that is still going strong, but I'm waiting for it to go out any time. Siill on the original belt!

yeah i can throttle down and it goes fine, and then i can increase the throttle and it will fly. but if i go to engage the blades and do that, it says no way. just sits there.

That's the strange part. If the motor is fine then the extra load of the blades shouldn't mess with the drive system at all.

Do you have any hills around? Leave the deck disengaged and go uphill and see what happens? And remember, troubleshooting can be fun!

Jack it up and take a good look at the belts and tensioners.

Maybe you were cutting wet grass and got a slipping tranny belt.

Sounds like low hydraulic fluid or a dirty filter, if it has a hydraulic filter.
