What is up with credit card fees?

Noticed that some web sites have a credit card fee and others do not. Unless the ones that don't actually work it into their prices.

Why are they charging you for doing business with them?  Is it a fee that they pass along that the cc company is charging to them?

Yep.  And most CC companies specifically do not allow that.  I'm not sure how you'd go about it, but if you were to somehow contact Visa/MC/AMEX whomever and let them know, the vendor might lose their ability to accept CC as payments.  Which would pretty much kill any online business they have.

Why punish the poor small business that is getting burnt by the huge fees?  With the last web site I did for a small gun shop, their bank and credit card company made more money in fees and software than the guy actually selling the product and doing the work.z
