[ARCHIVED THREAD] - iPhone - Are you going to get one? (Page 1 of 3)

| So, I've been reading up on it and it's pretty slick, but at $500...yikes. Hmmm. |
They recently announced that the screen will be glass instead of plastic for scratch resistance and clarity. |

I really dont get smart-phones for recreational use. I can see having a multimedia / broadband phone for work related reasons, but unless my job gave me mine, there is no way I would much more than the plain old basic wireless phone. Dont get me wrong, they are cool...but i could never justify the cost for functionality I would never use for just fun. |

Apple $175 Fee If You Cancel iPhone, Even Though You Paid Full Price 1,754 Views You better frickin' like your full-price iPhone because if you don't, AT&T plans on charging you the full $175 early termination fee, even though the phone's cost isn't at all subsidized under a long-term-agreement. Cellphone companies usually justify early termination fees on the basis that it's meant to recoup the cost of discounting a new phone to a new subscriber. But if the iPhone is selling for the full price, why would AT&T impose the same high fee? Oh wait, because it's the iPhone, and they can. I'm generally an Apple fan and I think the iPhone looks really slick, but it's too much money for me. Either way, it's good news for consumers. We're going to see some cool consumer smart phones in the coming years. ETA: I will say "visual voice mail" looks badass. |

For the more cell phone savy users out there, I've never had anything but a basic cell phone, so forgive my ignorance, but do the PDA phones and blackberry phones allow you to get internet access? Is there anything that the iphone can do that they can't, or vice versa? |
| They look neat, but I don't need something like that. I had a smartphone... and went back to my RAZR. I do use it as a modem (via bluetooth connection) for my PDA on occasion, but if I want mobile internet, I whip open my snazzy new Dell Latitude D420 with my HSDPA modem and get online that way. |
|
Negatory. Not a fan if iTunes, and I've read now that you'll need a subscription to it to make the phone work.. or at least make all the features work? Apple never ceases to let me down after all their hype anyway. I will be getting an 8525 I think, since I'm in the market for something "PDA-ish" to replace my SLVR. iPhone just doesn't "do it" for me. |
Pretty much every phone these days has internet access. If you have a bluetooth "dongle" for your PC or laptop, you can bond them and the phone shows up as a modem. Then, just dial a special number (On Cingular it's *66# or something) and whammo, you're on internet with your computer! The PDA phones tend to do it better just because they have actual keyboards, but if you tote a laptop everywhere, it doesn't really matter either way. |
Wow, very interesting. What exactly is a "dongle" and where could i get one? Does Verizon use the same number *66 ? |
| The size of cell phones is taking the wrong trend. They are getting bigger rather than smaller. Size is my first priority. Wearing a phone on the belt is gay - I repeat - gay. I want a small phone I can put in my pocket or the little cell phone pockets sewn into jeans. Most phones coming out nowadays are freakin' boat anchors. I want small, small, small. And forgive me for being a geezer, but phones are for talking. I don't text, I don't watch videos, I don't walk around groovin' out with my senses dulled by headphones. |
Me too. Can't much see the need. Though it is kind of cool. And.... I don't have time to screw with all that shit anyway. |
![]() Non croc wearing, 100% hetero Apple user here. Typing this on Safari with my trusty 2.5ghz G5 purring along next to me. You guys love to bash Apple but you don't understand just how important they are to the industry. I was just flipping through the Best Buy circular today at breakfast and noting how many cell phones are weakly trying to emulate the iPhone with their icons etc. Apple is a driving force in design and user interface and actually, a lot more... You don't have to like it. Just understand it. As to the original post... I like my phones to be phones. While I support the iPhone completely and would love to get my grubby digits on one to just marvel at the design and details... I can't justify more than $200 for something I don't really need. I've got plenty of other Apple products to satisfy my cravings for cool new gadgetry. |
