Coworker asked an interesting question...

If you don't keep your pool clean, it will start to grow algae.

It didn't come from the tap or fire hydrant.

Where did the source of algae come from?

As far as I know, it reproduces asexually.  ie, no spores.

So how does it get into your pool or home aquarium?

What makes you think it wasn't in the water to start with?
It could have also simply have been blown in there from the wind.

Algae spores can come in with your tapwater.  Small amounts can withstand the purification process.  It's harmless to us, but given the right conditions, it can grow into a colony.

It can also come in on your fish.  Some fishfood can also contain algae spores.

it is a blue green procaryote, and is nearly present in every water source except distilled water etc.

not a textbook definition but if you want that you will have to look it up.

It comes from between your toes and behind your ears.

Translated:  Algae is not really a plant...not really an animal.  But a photosynthetic BACTERIA.

Spores.  microscopic spores.  Borne on the winds.  Been here for billions of years.

As said, small amounts of algae survive the purification process. There are diferent types of Algae, "Bluegreen, or cyanobacteria is a prokaryote and is very hardy (probably the first living thing on Earth, certainly the oldest in the fossil record)  red, brown and green are eukaryotes (modern cells)and are not as common in places like pool water.  However many aquariums get river rocks, live rocks, and are even started with natural water...so investation is common.  Not a bad thing really if your tank is kept clean and well balanced.
