The wife was watching Animal Planet the other night and there was some show about animal rescue in NYC IIRC.

Anyway, the show featured "Special Agents" responding to a complaint about neglected dogs.  They were in uniform, with ASPCA patches prominently displayed on the shoulders and carrying sidearms.  The program kept referring to them as "Special Agents" and unless I totally misunderstood, gave the impression they were part of the city's LE organizations.

WTF?

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - the last I knew was NOT a government organization.  How the hell did they get to carry guns in New York City?  I'll be the first to admit that although I watched pretty damn close, I cannot definitively say that what they had in holsters weren't Tasers or something similiar but the butts sure looked like firearms to me!

WTF????

they are part of the animal control/protective division, but i think they get training and grant money from the ASPCA.

i could be wrong.
maybe our man on the NY street WAVE will be along shortly to give us the lo-down.

BTW..
i'd make that blonde call me daddy before the night was over.

They are in more states than NY and the Humane Society is working to get them in more states. They can arrest people who do not provide sufficient care to their pets.

A woman got arrested for killing the neighbors dog. The neighbors dog got loose in her yard so she shot the dog. The ASPCS determined she was not in danger when she shot the dog so she went to jail for animal cruelty. The ASPCA handcuffed her kids as well while they sorted everything out. She should have stayed inside her house and called the police. But she took the law into her own hands and is now going to get fined over $10,000 plus time in jail and she will have a criminal record. The best part of the arrest is the ASPCA took away her pet cat because they said she was unfit to have a pet. I love the ASPCA.

Another cool arrest happened to a guy with a sick dog. The guy refused to take the dog to the vet and told the ASPCA that if the dog was sick it would die like any aother animal. He did not have the money to pay a vet or just didn't want to see a vet. The ASPCA arrested him for animal cruelty, they took his dog to a vet, and after the dog was better he was adopted to a loving family.

The ASPCA is an extremely beneficial organization. Those examples are a little unusual, even of that is exactly what happened.

I am certainly against cruelty to animals.

But, are they cops or are they a private organization?  And if so, what gives them the authority to arrest anyone?
