[ARCHIVED THREAD] - SHTF shotgun (Page 1 of 4)
| Get the 6-shot 18.5" 500A with a synthetic stock. Unlike the 590, the 500 Persuador can take any model 500 spare barrel. Plus, the 500 is $100 cheaper, lighter and shorter. Nothing wrong with the 590, but its only advantage is magazine capacity and the pass through magazine tube. Internally, the two are identical. |
What would be considered a good price for both and I was leaning more toward the 18.5 due to the compactability. And I don't want to hear from anyone how it's only 1.5' because that can make a difference in a home self defense. |

I had the 9 shot 590 for a few years...... I had only shot about 100 rds total..... At first I thought I was not giving it the man love it needed to rack properly. Turns out....that nice little safety up there was defective and would slowly put it's self into the lock possition after one or two hard racks..... I traded it in for a new Glock and stayed with my Beretta 1201 semi auto....nice tactical green......very light wieght and smoth on the trigger. Just my story tho.......... |
What is the shotgun on the far left called? I think I have seen it in movies before. |
Thats a mossberg Bullpup |
Pumps are more reliable? Function even when dirty? The sound of the slide racking? Cost? More accessories are available for the 870 than just about any other gun, except the 10/22. |
Well, hitting someone with 9 rounds of 00 buck simultaneously with every pull of the trigger is more effective than hitting someone with a single glorified .22 round with every pull of the trigger. I realize this is ar15.com and not shotgun.com, but lets use a little common sense here. Using a rifle inside your home is just asinine. |
Shit, this is going to start a whole "AR vs Shotgun" debate...... AGAIN. |
| Get a semiautomatic shotgun. Beretta 1201FP, Benelli M1S90, M3 Convertible, Franchi LAW-12, Saiga-12C, Browning Auto-5, USAS-12. Much more fun to shoot, and they are, in many (most?) cases, just as dependable, especially ones that are recoil operated (Benelli/Beretta). Spend a little more and join the 21st century. |
It doesn't have to. When I was younger, and in Boy Scouts, I asked a soldier who was our range officer "Which is more powerful, an M-16, or a shotgun?" He told me it depended on the situation. Truth is, he's right. If its over 100 yards, the AR-15 is a much better choice. Under 20 yards, you can't go wrong with 00 buck. Slugs will do quite nicely over that distance, and pack a heck of a lot more punch than a .223. I'd use an AR-15 for a home defense gun about like I'd use wrench to hammer in nails. Yeah, you can use the wrench to pound the nails, but there are better tools for the job. |
|
LOL. For my money, I'd take the 20 inch barrel model. I just don't like pistol grips on shotguns. IMHO, they look good in movies, but aren't as practical in real life. YMMV. |
Pumps do not have a reliability edge over a good semi-auto. Especially since a social shotgun won't be fired that much. What good does the slide noise make? You should never threaten anyone with a firearm, including working the action to make a scary noise. Just shoot 'em! Accessories? Peep sight, sidesaddle, extended mag tube, sling attachments. Maybe a light. What else could you possibly need? If you buy a Mossberg and spent money accessorizing, you might as well buy an 1100 or 1187. Oh yeah, try to operate your pump one-handed. If you need to get the pump get an 870. |

Here are some decently priced used 1100's: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=73638925 http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=73986768 http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=73581508 You can buy used, non-ribbed barrels cheap enough. Shorten it to 22 inches. Get a peep sight installed on the reciever. Or, get a used slug barrel with an open sight mounted to the barrel. A mag extention and clamps won't cost much. You'll have a good combo gun. Forgot to mention this earlier: Have you ever tried to fire a pump action from the low prone position? |
+1. IF your going to get a shotgun, it is safe to assume you are using it at a much closer range then you would generally use a rifle. I believe that this makes a bayo all the more important. Mossy 590, parked, for the win! If your gonna be suckered into something without a bayo, FN makes some VERY nice self loading shotguns. I even hear they are second to none. -Ben |
Now all you need is a 5.56 barrel and a 30 shot mag and you're all set! Oops, Remington already made one. What does that abortion weigh?
|
Over 3000 fps isn't "glorified". That's a major change in terminal performance. |
That's a nice double. What's more intimidating, the sound of a pump being racked or a double-barrel in your face? |
