One of my friends went to summer camp at West Point in order to qualify for applying there for undergrad admission. He says one of the officers, a Major, there made several claims: 1) The M1 Garand is still in service by U.S snipers in Iraq. I was a little confused by this because I seriously thought M1's were outphased decades ago by the M14, some of which are still in service by U.S snipers (correct me if I'm wrong since I'm just an armchair commando). 2) The terrorists are using FN FALs, H&K G3's, and M16's in Iraq. Only the JV terrorists (Junior Varsity, as the Major called it). Any people here who have gone to Iraq can vouch or debunk the Major's claims? I originally thought that the officer may have been one of those people who didn't see much combat if at all, but my friend said he is an Airborne Ranger. Thanks. Again I'm just an armchair commando with no military experience so correct me if I'm wrong. |

1) Due to Springfield Inc's calling a M14 clone a M1A, semi-gun-people who think they know what they are talking about call the Army's semi-only-modified M14s (they disabled the happy-switch on a good number of them when they were issue rifles, because of how uncontrollable it was) M1s... Encountered it several times in the Army so far... 2) Iraq was a giant weapons grab-pile at the beginning of the war... All of those weapons existed in-country (yes, including M16s - remember they fought Iran in the 80s, and Iran did have M16s from the Shah era) and thus could logically be used... Still, the AK would be the most common... |
