[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Learning to play drums

Anyone got any tips on how I can start? I got a 5 piece pearl drum set I bought used at a yard sale but no idea where to begin. I wanna play mostly rock and classic rock. I'm getting the Mike Portnoy - In Constant motion DvD but I'm sure thats far too advanced for me lol

Any ARFcom drummers out there?

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend learning on your own, I'd find a good teacher. You're way better off not building any bad habits.

If you must, get a good basic book, use your wrists not your arms.

Start by dropping 30 bucks on an instructional DVD. Go to Guitar Center, try to judge if the clerk sounds knowledgeable (Guitar Center clerks are like gun store clerks -- there are good ones and bad ones), and buy what the clerk recommends. Make clear that you are looking for an instructional DVD for beginners. Most DVD's are "Look at the famous drummer show off." Entertaining, but not helpful.

Personally, I recommend selling the drums on eBay and getting a harmonica. Lots easier to carry around.
