Hey guys, I want to start a small website and have a few questions. It will not be a store or sell anything, just a personal use website.

I went to "godaddy.com" because I saw it mentioned in another thread here. It says that for $8.95 a year it registers my domain name. So does that just cover registering the domain name or does that include hosting the website and everything?

What amount of hosting or storage (I don't know what to call it) to host some pictures, video, and a few different pages within the website? I don't expect a ton of traffic, but I'd hope for maybe 500-750 visitors a month eventually.

Also, if it is hosted, am I hosting it from my own computer? Do I have to keep my computer hooked up to the internet the entire time then?

Thanks

IIRC, GoDaddy hosts a basic website for free. So, $8.95 per year should be the only charge you pay. EDIT: Oops, wrong answer - Looks like GoDaddy charges anywhere from $2.80 to $3.99 per month for a "basic" hosting fee (depending on how long you sign up for it). Typically, you provide a credit card number, which they use to automatically pay the hosting fee every month.

Each still picture you put on your website probably won't be more than several hundred K (assuming you save it at an internet-friendly size and resolution before uploading it to your website's server). So, 100 images could probably comfortably fit in 20 megs of website space (200 K x 100 pictures = 20 Megs)

Video is another matter entirely - It can require HUGE amounts of server space, depending on length, resolution, etc. of each video.

No, and no. You upload everthing to the website's server, which is operated and maintained by GoDaddy (or some other web hosting service). After you've uploaded everything, your computer no longer plays any part in having a website - you can shut it off, sell it, blow it up with Tannerite, etc. Anyone who accesses your website will be connected to GoDaddy's server, which will supply all photos, video, etc.

the "free" hosting from godaddy places an ad bar at the top. FWIW the $6.99/ mo plan (or any cheaper one) should be sufficient for your needs.

I use 1and1.com, but I also have their developer service . They have a $2.99/month where you get 5 domain names and the tools to help build te site included.
If you sign up with them, tell them customer #6880645 referred you

ETA: They also charge $5.99 a year for domains not aquired through a hosting package.

I have a new website. How do I get listed on the search engines?

Sorry for hijack, but I'm sure the OP needs to know also.

I know GoDaddy has a search submission feature.  Don't remember the cost but they submit it to the top 5 or so search engines.  I use GoDaddy for my hosting and It's been working out great, except my page looks like crap.  I need to spend some time working on that instead of surfing ARFcom.

okay, so I registered the domain at godaddy.com.

When I go to build a "starter web page", it says that I don't have any domains available. Am I suppose to wait a few hours or so after registering the domain before I can do this or is something screwed up?
