I spent the better part of my day off yesterday redoing some putz's entry on the "Battles of Lexington and Concord" on Wikipedia. It was so full of BS I almost threw up.  I'm still working on the German entry for it- it's worse.

Actually, the speed with which the correction was just made shows the strength of the system. Often vandalized topics can be locked by the admins. I find Wiki to be the first place I go anymore on a topic I am unfamiliar with - ESPECIALLY if it is controversial, since it will be one of the few onl ine places to show the debate - mention there IS a debate - and provide links to info on both sides. Would I cite it for reseach? Of course not - that would be silly. I wouldn't cite an encyclopedia or most magazines or newspapers either, though - unless I am assessing conventional wisdom or opinions. Unfortunately, the more obscure the subject matter, the less it is policed, and the less likely it is to be thorough - or even accurate. |
I agree. A good reading through wikipedia would probably be a better educational endeavour than many high-school history classes. |

Actually, since Wikipedia *is* an encyclopedia, that's the exact reason people wouldn't/shouldn't use/cite it for anything resembling "serious" academic work. |

Does anyone have a screen of the vandalism from the V-22 Osprey entry? An arfcommer did it, and the vandalism was in the caption of the picture where the Marines were parachuting out. "U.S. Marines are informed they are flying in a V-22 Osprey and react accordingly" (or words to that effect. HI-larious! |
