Educate me. When you want to set up a web page, when and why do you go with a web host versus setting up your own web server?

Just by asking that question means web host. Some one else maintains the server off site for you and is pretty much the same thing except you dont have to admin it. I can sell you a server with a big fat pipe for 2000 for server and then 300 a month for the pipe od 10.00 a month for a web host. If your company is big and you have an admin talk to him. If you dont have an admin or not many hits on a site or ..... Get a host for now, if you grow to where you need a server you can hire someone to set it up :) |
+1 With a server you have all the hard ware headaches as well as woring about the internet. Not to mention crappy connections, how often does your DSL or Cable go out that you are not aware of? Plus there is the cost. Unless you have a website with TONS of traffic do web host. It is alot cheaper and they take care of the hardware and most help with software stuff too. Look for a company that is real good with communication. Drop me an IM if you want a good company. |
Oh, in that case you may be better off doing it yourself, take less time than finding what you're looking for. Do get a spell checker with that server

There is no such thing as "the best". All of them have connection problems, server crashes, or outages for some reason or another. If you really need "the best" there is a service provider that is located way under ground, has their own power plant, and multiple redundent data connections going to the building. I forget the name but I'm sure you could find them. If you are just wanting to setup your own site and need something good and cheap look at www.godaddy.com. They are more than just TV commericials. They have the best hosting packages for the money. If you want something a little better try www.crystaltech.com. I used them in the past and can only say good things about them. They give you a lot at a reasonable price. |
