Why do so many banks charge fees on their checking accounts if you don't use direct deposit?

Do they assume that there's more "work" required, and therefore the need to charge you?

I've got BOA right now, and have been looking at switching to other banks that are nearby, but they all seem to do this.

Screw banks, you should be looking to join a credit union.

You might try a credit union. Never had an atm charge from their end.

Always better rates.

No cost checking, except for my checks.
