I would go with the buy option also. Its one of the better movies I have seen in a long time. Plus is has a hot chick with a gun :)
Link Posted: 10/2/2001 9:03:43 PM EDT
Yes....Buy.....I am gonna get that and 3000 miles to graceland..
Link Posted: 10/2/2001 9:04:31 PM EDT
Rented it. It was interesting, but too much was spent creating a love story when it wasn't really necessary. It does have its moments, primarily at the beginning.

worth it, I bought it

Rachel! Oh my [:P]

I thought 3,000 miles to Graceland was pretty cool. Costner was half way decent for a change.

Link Posted: 10/2/2001 10:44:55 PM EDT
this movie sucked! Don't buy it!! I went to see that movie thinking it would be cool & it was stupid!! The only redeeming thing about the movie was Ed Harris, he was cool, that's it.

I think it worth buying it especially if your are into war movies. I don't understand why can't they make similar movie about Carlos H.. I think he deserves it.

Actually, it was far more pro-Nazi and anti-Communist.

Watched it on pay-for-view, was not impressed overall. There were few good scenes at the beginning, but for my money the book "War of the Rats" would be a better expenditure of money. Other than the 155 meter shot on the radio wire (which did not look to be that far!) I failed to see any actual long range shooting. Also I dare anyone to hold their eye that close to the scope while shooting a real Mosin-Nagant 7.62x54. You'd think he was shooting an AR, not a gun which packs a decent kick. Mike

Forget the movie, READ THE BOOK! The movie was based on a VERY VERY small section of the book. The book is the whole story of the Battle of Stalingrad. From the street to street and house to house (even room to room) fighting to the consumption of the German Sixth Army within the "Kessle". Particularly interesting is how a field mouse effectively halted the 48th Panzer Division. The chapters are based on diary & journal entries as well as eyewitness interviews and "Government" files. I thought is was a very objective work. Sadistic brutality as well as amazing acts of compassion and bravery ran rampant on all sides.

no...no...no...nyet...nyet [:\] it was both anti-nazi, anti-communist. i watched the film several time and there is nothing in the story element that glorifies facism. in fact is makes totaltarinism look inefficient. the nazi were just more efficient then the commies. thanks to us support of materials and food (which is not mentioned in the film) the nazi's lost. allowing the russians to push the germans out of stalingrad. I have to add that the fascists & nazis were "more efficient" than the commies because the fascists allowed private ownership of property and some level of individual initiative. The closer you get to true centralized control, the less efficient your system will be. Communism, socialism, national socialism and fascism are all left wing ideologies. Communism is the farthest left, and (at least in practice*) the most totaltarian. I suppose one can argue that fascism is potentially more dangerous, since it is more efficient. However, communism has a habit of folding into a more fascist system, the way the Soviet Union did with its appeal to "Mother Russia", the return of the Orthodox Church, and limited forms of private ownership. * I say "in practice", because this isn't how it is supposed to be, just how it always ends up.

I'm going to buy a copy few weeks after it comes out. My local rental store bring in bunch of copies of new movie to rent then sell them cheap few weeks later when rentals slow down. It cost $4.00 to rent for 2 nights but in few weeks I can buy a copy for about $9.00.

OK, two redeeming qualities, or would that count as three ??

What Makarov said. The book gives you the whole story. Hitler's obsession with Stalingrad was the destruction of the German 6th Army.
Link Posted: 10/3/2001 6:10:16 PM EDT
The book was definitley much better. The movie however was entertaining.

Except for Ed Harris getting whacked, it was a good movie. You should have seen the looks of the people around me in the theater when I expressed my disgust at his death at the end. Hated seeing the guys with a Mauser get killed. Not that I'm pro-Nazi, I'm just pro-Mauser. [sniper]

I think they should have dumped or toned down the love story and should have done more with the Ron Pearlman character instead of killing him of so fast. Then again the movie might have turned out like a WWII version of "Sniper".
