What doe this problem sound like?  My truck (2002 F150 v6 4.2 liter manual transmission 80,000 miles not 4 wheel drive.) makes a rapid clinking sound (metal on metal) when I give it gas and when I don’t give it gas when it is in the 25-30 mph range.  It does this regardless of what gear I am in.   When I am in the 65-70 range it is more of a squealing sound.  The sound is not constant and comes and goes through out the drive, I don’t notice the sound being made any more or less when I’m accelerating or cruising.   Well off to the mechanics it goes, just wondering what to expect.

Check the carrier bearing if equipped

Carrier bearing (as mentioned above) wheel bearings, U-joint, rear differential, something in the driveline most likely.
