The long and the short of it, very old friend of mine who can't shoot anymore gave me a Gen 2 ATN AMT Mk 6500 for FREE!!  Now my rifle weighs about 13lbs

Pretty cool. One of the local fun stores has one of those original 10lb+ starlight scopes. Thing's freaking huge, but cool anyway.

How do you like it?  I have one to try and spot deer with and the thing is just about worthless.

Well my lunch was around $2600, but I assume you weren't talking to me.

I think I may put mine on ebay, not much good for what I want if for.  Maybe a good IR illuminator would help.

yeah, after about 10 yards it's pretty much useless, but I didn't pay anything for it so I'm not horribly disappointed.  However, I have some theories on why everything that far away is so blurry, I think it has something to do with the lack of gain control on this unit.  I'm gonna experiment with controlling how much light enters the objective lens to see if I can clear it up a bit.  I'll post more as I figure it out.

You lucky bastard.  Even if it is not very good it was free.

It's not near as good as some of the Gen 3+ stuff I've seen, but it's a quite a bit better than Gen1 cheap stuff.

Try cutting up some blank color negatives, layering them over the lens of a good flashlight (SureFire) and aiming it in the direction that you're looking through the scope.

If it's a matter of illumination, this should improve it quite a bit.

I'm thinking of finding a high output IR LED and giving it a 250mW driver.  God I love being friends with electrical engineers.
