Winchester, I have one.

Marlin is best but I own a Winchester.

You left out the MARLIN 1894.........I have 4 of those and LOVE THEM!

Also have a MARLIN 1895CB in 45-70......it's NOT the guide gun! It has a 24" tube and holds a BUNCH of 45-70 cartridges!

Savage 99 was far ahead of its time with rotary magzine and positive lock action.  If only they made on in normal calibers...

If the Winchester was made before 1964 then it is. If not the BLR.
4/8/2007 1:35:12 PM EDT
[#7]
Marlin / side ejection, / less jams, / easier to mount optics,
4/8/2007 1:35:16 PM EDT
[#8]
Marlin 1894 but it's the only one I have
4/8/2007 1:42:48 PM EDT
[#9]
Isn't the Marlin 336C and the Guide Gun basically the same action?
4/8/2007 1:43:05 PM EDT
[#10]
Marlins are my favorite.
4/8/2007 1:46:57 PM EDT
[#11]
BLR
4/8/2007 2:04:25 PM EDT
[#12]
1st choice =  Marlin 1895 SS  45/70
2nd choice =   Savage 99        300

Like you said the old Savage was far ahead of times, and a good lever action. Got mine used in 1966 and will never part with it.

The Marlin is built tough and will handle hot loads. Good bear gun.

[#13]
Savage 99 was and is the best of all the lever guns. They got too expensive to build and they quit making them. i realize that you can't use them in cowboy matches but for hunting they cannot be beat.
4/8/2007 2:25:43 PM EDT
[#14]
just what is it that make a lever action SOOOOOOOO expensive?
I mean, I have semi autos and bolt action .22 but the lever action is hundreds of bucks more. I refuse to pay.

Please elaborate
4/8/2007 2:29:13 PM EDT
[#15]
You also forgot the Winchester Model 88. It was available in .308 amongst other calibers.
4/8/2007 3:10:24 PM EDT
[#16]
Which caliber?  For 30-30 or rifle calibers, I really like the Winchester.  Assuming by your other revolver poll, it looks like you're pondering SASS.  If that's the case, you'll need a pistol caliber levergun, in which case I'd go Marlin or Rossi (worked over).
4/8/2007 3:23:17 PM EDT
[#17]
Well mine is not on the list. I have a Uberti 1866 yellowboy in 45colt. Really nice rifle and accurate.
4/8/2007 3:24:34 PM EDT
[#18]
Owned Winchester 94 (post 64) it was a piece of crap. Sold it got a marlin 30aw (got it for $99 on clearance at wal-mart) 10 years, truck load of dead deer and lots of cans later never had a problem.

Even though I don't own one, I'd take the Marlin in .45/70 anyday!

I have a Marlin 1894S in 44 Mag. Love that little rifle. With the straight stock it has a bit of a  kick, but is accurate as hell.
4/8/2007 3:35:38 PM EDT
[#21]
Marlin 1894

The first firearm I ever bought was my Winchester 94 30-30 AE.  I wouldn't dream of selling it

.243 and .308 aren't "normal"!?

I wonder how many people that are voting winchester, have shot a Marlin. My guess is 0.
4/8/2007 3:53:32 PM EDT

I voted Marlin 336. I have one in .35 Remington so i'm biased, but it's a solid, reliable gun.

I have one from the factory in .308 Winchester.  Can't get more normal than that.

Edit - I have a 94 in .44 mag and a Marlin in 45-70.  Still the Savage is better than both.  Nothing wrong with any of them the Savage is just better all around.

BT97, Ive seen your questions about historic weaponry here today and I have just one thing to say:

If you want to wear assless hairy goat chaps, its OK, you dont have to buy special guns to do that

These Old guns are a curse, before you know it your going to be shooting Colt Patersons!

There are some inventions that are difficult to improve upon. For example the C-Clamp used in wood working. Or some of the many different types of Hand Planes. (Not the modern day piece of junk that you can find in a Home Depot).

The same can be said for some firearms. The Winchester 94 is delightful to quickly shoulder and shoot. It has a fine balance.

The Savage 99 was a far more sophisticated rifle that unfortunately died...

Of Bolt Actions...many of the old Mausers can only be beaten in terms of fit and finish by modern Bolt Actions that come out of Custom Shops. Factory Bolt Actions simply do NOT in come close in comparison.

I've yet to see a modern day Bolt Action rifle (Custom or Factory) that is as every bit as slick as a 1903 Mannlicher-Schoenhauer Carbine.

Some of the Older Double Action Revolvers exhibit workmanship that is flat out superior to their modern day brethren.

If we were to restrict our selves to Cap and Ball Revolvers then the Colt Navy wins hands down. It pointed and shot nicer than the 1860 Colt Army (maybe that was why Wild Bill Hickock preferred it).

Yes...Old Guns have their Allure...they exude not only History, but quality and refinement oozes from the poors of their wooden stocks. When fired they speak with a Final Authority that silences their downrange detractors.

They whisper of obscure wars in little known places, of private meetings in darkened alleys where affairs were settled, their Royal Blue Finish and light gun oil musk with hints of Cordite...offers something that no modern gun can...History.

Marlin 1894!
I have three of them in three different calibers, .44Mag, .45Colt Cowboy, and a 1895 45-70.
These are wonderful rifles!
I would say that the Winchester is also nice - but the Marlin is stronger and all of mine have functioned flawlessly.

A number of real gunsmiths have told me that the Marlin is far superior to the Winchester.

[#36]
I voted Winchester. I have a Marlin .45-70 Guide Gun and a Winchester Trapper in .44 Magnum. The Trapper is more traditional looking, a real cowboy lever action, and that counts for a lot to me. The Marlin has an absolutely fantastic trigger, but the lever has a sharp L-shaped top to the lever that makes it hard to operate quickly without cutting the palm of my lever hand unless I wear gloves. I like the Marlin, but the Winchester is just more fun.

I have exactly three rifles that do not have a pistol grip, two of those were inherited. One of those is my Grandfather's '49 Winchester 94 30-30. Over a hundred deer taken with it.

Voted for Winchester 94, even though the 30/30 I had was a brute on my shoulder, my M1 Garand was a pu$$y-cat compared to the Winnie, the weight of the rifle I guess.

Marlin Guide Gun. Small, compact, and pack plenty of punch.

Second option of course would be the 1894 in .357!

Winchester 9410 the most fun you will have with a lever action shotgun ever!

The Win 92 along with the Win 94,and the Mar 94 were punished with high pressure loads ,the win 94 and mar 94 both both fubared!  The Win 92 turned out to be the better design!

I own 3 of the 5.

Win94's in 357 & 30-30 rank #3. Marlin 1895G in 45-70 & Marlin 1894 in 44 mag collectively come in #2. #1 is my favorite, a Browning BLR in 7mm-08 i found on the used rack at Gander Mountain for $379. Fit, function and finish are top notch on my browning. I shoot 140 Nosler partitions with iron sights all day with great success
