doing 15 over at 1am on the highway with NO cars around.

Got a 90 dollar ticket and 4 points off.  Now idk about the money but doesn't that seem like a lot of points to get off for 15 over?  Not that i'd have any clue about that but it just surprised me when the cop said he was getting 4 off.

90 is cheap... I think 4 points is too much... either your friend heard him wrong or the cop mis-spoke.

then there is the third option.

I may be wrong... it's been known to happen

The other kid in the car checked the ticket and it said 4 points.

And just last week another kid we know got busted doing 30 over in a 45 and the cop 'made a deal' with him and only wrote down that he was going 10 over and gave him 2 points and a 70 dollar fine...

edit: if he takes it to court and pleads guilty is there still a chance the judge could reduce it?

Make sure your buddy takes advantage of any programs that can keep it off of his driving record. He will likely have to attend some course or pay a fee, but it'd be worth it assuming he's fairly young like you. The increased insurance cost is the really bad part about getting a ticket--assuming your dog wasn't shot during the traffic stop.

I got ticketed a bit over a year ago for failing to stop at a red light before turning right. It kind of sucked because I was pretty sure it was yellow when I started my turn and I didn't think I was doing anything wrong, but oh well. I was able to go to court and pay a $100 administrative fee and not have any moving violations for 6 months then have the thing dropped off of my record, keeping my insurance rates from going up.

Wait a minute!!!

You mean to tell me in WI it is up to the cop to set the amount of points off a license?

As far as I know the cop sets it and if you don't show up to court then what he sets is what you get.

If you go to court then the judge can lower it if he wants and(I think) usually does.

Depends on alot of different things, if it was a residential neighborhood, 15 over could be considered reckless driving.  It's all officer discretion.  It doesn't matter what time it is or how many cars are around, the bottom line is he was still speeding.  If he doesn't like the points he can take it to court and they may drop it down to 2 but it all just depends on the judge and your friends attitude about it.

WOAH! learn something new every day. Thanks. In NY and CA when you get pulled over ... speeding is set at "X" points and that is that. Interesting at the WI system

Not sure how it is in WI but it mostly depends on what the ticket is for.  I know in TN if you look in the Drivers Handbook it tells you how many points for what kind of offense.  Check the state's website in WI and it may tell you.

Correction, I checked WI website and found this.  It's an open and shut 4 points on the DL for 11-19mph over the speed limit.  The officer does not set the points.

Someone will probably end up correcting me on this but I think once you get x number of points on your license you get it taken away for a certain ammount of time(or have to go through some course to get it back).  Idk how many it is though.

Correct sir, 12 points in WI and you lose your license.  If you look at the link I posted above, it shows that if your friend takes an approved driver safety class they can lower it up to 3 points should he pass.  That's not a bad deal, take the course and only get 1 point off the license..

hmmm...  i don't think texas has this system.  i've had my share of tickets, and have never heard anything about points.

He said it was on the highway...

I went 30 over on the highway today past a speed trap, waved at the cop, he waved back, and didn't even follow me...

Thats why I live in AZ.

Chips, I did quite a bit of looking on the Texas DPS and DMV websites, I don't believe they use the point system there either.  Not quite sure how they do the suspensions/revocations, but I guess they leave it up to the courts and by the driving record.

yeah, i'm thinking i would've heard about it by now.  a ticket for 20 over probably would've cost me a few points

+1
I got totally screwed by VA cops on I-95

Got a ticket, no problem I was speeding don't even remember how fast.  Well yes I do same speed everyone else was doing.

Sent in the ticket with the fine no problem.

Couple of months later my insurance TRIPLES

Apparently here in NC that speeding ticket magically became reckless driving 4 points and crazy insurance for 3 years

I have a family lawyer I send my tickets to. They all become parking tickets, last one was 55 in a 35, $110 parking fine. No points.
