There are style guides online.

Is it a scientific paper or for a humanities class or something? Usually humanities will make you use MLA and sciences will make you use APA.

None of my English teachers have ever said a word about APA aside from telling us to ignore it because they teach MLA.

I took comp I and II about 15 years ago.  We were given a list (an addendum to the syllabus) of books to purchase.  One was a writer's handbook.  We were advised to hang onto it throughout our academic pursuits.  I assumed everyone started out with basics and used reference materials like that.  Heck, I still have many of those texts from college.

I sold back most of my books, of course, but I made certain to keep stuff like that handbook.  And it did payoff.
