Why are retailers selling PCs with 512MB RAM and Windows Vista?  I realize they want to upsell the customer to 1GB + , but this seems akin to selling a car with a 1-speed transmission and then saying "Oh by the way, you'll need this 5-speed upgrade to actually be able to drive anywhere".

Why not just raise the base price a bit and put in a minimum of 1GB? Surely it would decrease the number of tech support incidents and returns?

Well right now I would buy the computer with only 512MB… the reason being was I saw 2GB of DDR2-667 for $98 bucks no rebates and 2GB DDR2-800 for $155 or $130 after rebate. Right now you can buy ram and upgrade a new computer much cheaper that buying it when you order.

Same reason you hear car ads extolling their products with optional features and then showing the price for a base model. It's just marketing.
