What are some good bourbons to try?  Say, in the $20-$40 range?  I had a glass of Woodford Reserve last week that I really enjoyed, what others should I be looking at?

Really?  I've had a bottle of Maker's for a couple years now and it never gave me the "wow" Woodford did.  I should probably take a look at it again as I'm sure my tastes have changed.

I would normally take your complement in candor my dear Gentleman, however I cannot allow Makers Mark to go uncomplemented. Return to me after you have drank copious amounts of the nectar of the the Gods, otherwise known as Makers Mark.  Only then, in a joy full state you will be able to truly see the glory and what one of the finest bourbons is.  So, I will allow you to rescind and to save face and return to me with a proper evaluation.

Now get busy and start drinking!

First off, Jack Daniels is NOT a bourbon,

I agree JB Black is damn tastey with a little extra kick, 43% alch per volume. As opposed to the normal %40.

I am a Scotch drinker.  I take my scotch straight up.  I've drank alot of scotch.  Unfortuanately, a bottle of scotch only lasts me about 6 hours, so I began drinking bourbon.  Now I've drank alot of bourbon.

I keep Makers Mark as a standby.  It is a smooth whiskey, of consistent quality.  It also mixes well if you like to mix.  Also available in a nice big bottle.  Stopped with a pouring lid.

I prefer Woodford.  It is an amazing whiskey.  Again, consistent quality, smooth drink and also mixes well, if you like mixing.  Available in a small, flat (so it doesn't roll out from under the seat) bottle.  Hard to find the big bottle.  Stopped with a cork; very classy.

Bookers is also good, but a bit stout.  Again, consistent, quality whiskey that tastes like whiskey.

Finally, Bulleit.  Another excellent bourbon that I recommend, though I can get both Woodford and Bulleit locally, so I almost always buy Woodford.

Order of preference:

1:  Woodford
2:  Bulleit
3:  Makers
4:  Bookers
5:  something other than bourbon.

Thanks for the help, gentlemen, keep it coming!

Here are a few others I've been looking at (may be out of the original price range):
Blantons

Van Winkle Special Reserve Lot B (12 yr aged)
Evan William's SB Vintage

The best that I've tasted (and the best rating I know of) is the 20 year-old Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve. Rated 99/100 at the World Spirits Championship. Excellent, and in a class by itself. They make a 25 year-old, but i heard it wasn't as good as the 20, although I haven't tried it.

In my opinion, the best in the OP's price range is Maker's Mark.

Try Knob Creek Bourbon, you will be very happy with it.

MM is good, but Knob Creek is far tastier, and smooth

Neat is good or with some nice water.

Do not use nasty tasting water if you don't want to have that shitty taste in your mouth afterwards.

The bad tap water can combine with the flavors and really do some injustice.

Well, hay! I went out and bought some Bulleit. Its good stuff! Reminds of a cross between Makers and Bookers. w00t!!

It tastes kind of sour and sweet, and spicy. Its 90 proof, so that is probably the sweetness. Not as sour as Jack though. Bulleit sour is just an aftertaste.

Its good, but a slow sipper. Otherwise the spice gets too strong if you guzzle it.

Yep. To me, it was the Starbucks of Bourbon. Big let down.

Woodford
Elijah Craig
Van Winkle
WT Rare Breed
Old Forester (100 proof)

I like to rotate among them. OF is my day in, day out brand. After a lifetime of Scotch, for some reason my tastes changed. Never was a big bourbon fan. Now I enjoy bourbon and dark rums. Last time I tried Scotch it seemed insipid. Go figure. The "best" bourbon is the one you like best.

no, I just knew something was up when some of those brands had (american whiskey trail) next to them in parenthesis. the bullets gave it off too - you don't see very many lists that neat on ARFCOM. I contribute to wikipedia alot too, and i've seen alot of the alcohol lists.

Not an expert by any means, but if I want to drink and it's not beer, it's bourbon.

I did drink quite a bit of Makers Mark (good stuff), but then start drinking Buffalo Trace (having some now) as the standby. A little bit cheaper than MM at about $20 per bottle, and pretty good.

I've also had Eagle Rare, by the same distillery, and it was OK, but like MM and Buffalo Trace a bit better.

Selection here is only averaged so haven't had the chance to try a lot of them.
