There are many, many people here who were in scouts. Many of us made Eagle even.

|
I was a Boy Scout from the age of 12 to 18. I was a Life Scout, Order of the Arrow, and Jr. Asst Scoutmaster. My only regret I was a dumb ass kid and should have worked harder for my Eagle. I only lacked 4 merit badges. On the positive side, I always had great Scoutmasters and one was even a survival instructor in the Marines. |
|
I was an Eagle Scout. I started at the minimum age to be a Cub Scout(6 or 7) and did my Eagle Scout BOR on my 18th birthday. It had it's ups and downs but was generally pretty fun. My first troop was very active, but had a female Assistant Scoutmaster who was a real bitch. Eventually I left and went to another troop which was less active but more fun. The second troop had a bit of a paramilitary slant and campouts ended up feeling like combat training. I remember doing casualty evacuations and playing capture the flag and manhunt while being watched through NVGs. One of the Assistant Scoutmasters over there turned out to be a SOG poser, but we didn't realize it until he was gone. |

Eagle at 16. I attribute that success to the strong will and direction of my mother. I love most of my Boy Scout experiences. It taught me many good things, useful things, and cool things (e.g., shot my first gun at Scout camp). It also gave me the opportunity to learn to deal with bullies. Some of my best learning experiences came when I was in positions of leadership and fucked up. And then there was the 50 miler through Philmont and two 50-mile canoe trips through Algonquin Provincial Park. I'm a better man because of scouts. |
|
Cubs, Webelo's (Arrow of Light), Scouts (Eagle in 1976). Did a 110 mile trek at Philmont, a 50 mile canoe trip on the Saco River and 50 mile hike in the White Mountain range in New Hampshire. I have one son in now (just finishing the requirements for Second Class) and my second son is itching to start. I volunteer time on the Troop Committee as Treasurer. I grew up in a rough mill town in New England. Scouts gave me a moral compass; and as another post says, made me a better man. |
Once an Eagle, always an eagle. |

Tiger to Eagle & Brotherhood. It was amazing how many interviews I recieved in college (I only had a 3.2 in Chem Eng, not stellar enough for the best companies, but decent) that started off with "Normally we're looking for _____, but since you're an Eagle Scout, we thought you might be a good candidate." Tiger to Eagle and I spend a summer working as the Aquatic Director for my Council's scout camp. I finished the last requirment for my Eagle at 2330 the day before I turned 18. Being an Eagle Scout got me my first stripe in the Army. I still carry my Eagle Scout Card in m wallet. |

Just a little twist on the Boy Scout thing... I did Sea Scouts when I was younger, and now I'm adult volunteer. Geez, I've been doing it for 8 years now. Sea Scouts is part of the venturing program for older (14-18yo) male/female scouts. We have a Quartermaster Award that is very similar to the Eagle. We are a bit different from Boy Scouts, we do more water activities, sailing, powerboating and stuff like that. Sea Scouts, BSA City of Roses Website (our brother ship as my female ship doesn't have a website) ok sameless plug over. |

I stopped going due to SEVERE disappointment, and TERRIBLE leadership. First cub scout leader... Embezzled all our money, never ordered our patches, was drunk 1/2 the time anyway. Second leader was okay, but nothing special... At least this year I got all my patches, and the 'backordered' ones from my first year. Third leader... Hardcore alcoholic. He was the 'outdoorsman' type who taught us a *LOT* of fun & cool stuff, but he was still drunk 1/2 the time, and later lost his spot as the leader when he started beating (and I mean seriously ass-whooping) his kids in front of the rest of the troop. Fourth leader... Another one who didn't do much, never ordered our patches, I never got them that year, and he was later caught pocketing a pretty sizable amount of our money too... ![]() Our parents took us out of Scouts after that third 'Winner'. ![]() At least my mom enrolled me in survival type courses and bought me all the camping/survival books & stuff that I wanted as I grew older... Anyway, I still turned out a good man. Better than some of my Troop leaders that's for damn sure! |

Cub Scout - 1970 to 1973 - Arrow of Light Boy Scout - 1973 to 1976 - First Class* Cubmaster - 2004 to 2006 Webelos II Den Leader - 2006-2007 Son in BSA now, just earned his Scout badge. "See Sig Line" * quit Scouts when I found the three "P's" Pussy, Petroleum, and Paycheck"! Perfume may be substituted for pussy depending on your audience... |

Cubs, Arrow of Light, Order of Arrow (Brotherhood IIRC - it's been 20 years), Eagle in '88. Currently an assistant scoutmaster. Got asked about it more often than not on job/school/residency interviews, including my current job. After learning about me being an Eagle, the guy doing the interview said, "that clinched it for me - we want to offer you the job." |
|
Wow, there are quite a few Eagle Scouts here. Congrats. IIRC only 4% of scouts ever make it to Eagle. It is hard work, requires dedication on the boy's part and plenty of parental involvement. I earned a ton of merit badges but never made it to Eagle. I loved the camping and activities. I am now an Assistant Scout Master with an 11-year old son who is going to start working toward his Eagle. |
