Any suggestions?  Don't want to leave a mess behind, and the targets might be too difficult to retrieve.

Uh, paper?

I usually use a cheap bag of apples. Small, reactive, explode reel gud, biodegradeable.

And once a year or so I'll rake up all the hard-target bullcrap and hulls that folks have left behind.

Go to your local store and ask them when they restock the produce section.  Go back for a few days at that time and they'll give you all kinds of fruit they're just going to trash because it's turning rotten.  Place.  Shoot.  Enjoy.  Repeat.

Use food items. The animals will love you. "Biodegradable" clay targets are fun to shoot, but they take a little longer to break down than you would think. I shoot them almost exclusively when shooting trap, but they're a lot of fun for rifles and handguns too.

Are regular clay targets actually biodegradable? Or are they a different target?

They are not the same.  White flyer

*******

I was going to suggest rice cakes.   It might depend on the location, though, because it would be a pain in the neck to attract a bunch of unwanted targets while everyone is shooting.  Hopefully this is not an issue for you.   I wouldn't worrry about racoons, just the diurnal / crepuscular types.

Also, you may need to check for rules.about wherever you're shooting.   One place I used to go to was not an official site, but there was a USFS posting  miles away that governed it.   They were not too keen on messes being left behind.  The argument that your mess will break down in the sun or be eaten may not get you out of a ticket.
