ok i know some of you guys are in the know on this vista nonsense so ill ask here. i have several videos that i can make play on my XP desktop using the vlc player. however they will not work on my vista laptop using the same player and i cannot find a codec to make them work in any player. gspot cant even give me a codec. any thoughts? |
I ponied up and bought a piece of software that would take advantage of my 3D accelerator, and never had to worry about codecs since (and I had better not, given the $50 I spent!) However, when I was still bumming around with free codecs, I used to the K-Lite codec pack. If your laptop is using a Nvidia or ATi video card, get the official codecs which take advantage of the hardware you have. If you don't want to pay, it's not that hard to get them for free online really... |
Download the Gspot Codec Information Appliance, and it will tell you what codec the video is, and what you need to install. |
thanks, but i got the newest gspot and it cant even find these codecs. i got a couple new movies from torrents that are in this new codec and they will only play with VLC player on XP. i can play regular divx and xvid movies with VLC on vista but not ones in this "special" codec. |
| The ONLY codec package that you need (and the only one that worked on my Vista Ultimate) is: ffdshow. I used revision 895. Make shure, that you get rig of other codecs prior to install. |
download a trial version of a dvd player like windvd and see if it will show video then it says its vista compatible |
Just a side note: 1. Create system restore point prior to install (allways do that prior to any software install). 2. Right-click on downloaded file and select "Run as Administrator". The ffdshow handles virtually everything, and it is a plug-in to Windows Media Player, so nothing else required. There is another package (calls Vista Codec Package by Shark007), works fine but crashes Windows Explorer while building thumbnail icons, so I ditched that one. PS: AVI file should be xvid or divx, but neither of the official developers for them have Vista sertified / stable version yet. |
If you try to open file in Media Player and no correct codec is installed, Vista will prompt you to search the Internet for it. If that does not happens, some other screwy codec hijacked your system (could be NERO, or some other stuff that you tried before). I would suggest to look for an information on how to clean your system from old codecs and give ffdshow another try. Good luck! |

had a thought, i could run it through gspot on the xp computer that played it and see what the codec was. it said the video codec was dixv 5.0 DIVX503b1328 the following filters were used: (src)-->>--(A)-->(AVI SPLITTER)-->(B)-->-(DIVX decoder filter)-->--(C)--(video renderer) i have absolutely no idea what this does to help me but im going to see if i can get divx 5 if i dont have it. i found that this particular codec was part of DIVX5.2.1, if i get a higher release will it be able to work with all prior codecs? |
See my post above: DIVx nor xVID did not released Vista stable / sertified codec as yet. You can try it but results could be unpredictable. As I stated, your machine has some codec on it from your prior trials, you need to find it and get rid of it. But in any case, if you will create restore point (Control Panel, System, System Protection, Create Restore Point), you can try anything, and in cace of failure revert back. |

Two things everyone needs to learn about that has a computer: 1 DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT (DRM) 2 TRUSTED COMPUTING Vista has DRM built right into the system itself......google VISTA DRM if you don't know what it means.....and learn how much control Microsoft is getting over your computer and what you do. I would uninstall Vista and at least go back to running XP. Vista is also a massive resource hog. Unless there are 'must have' applications that need Windows....run Linux....no viruses per se.....trojans or DRM to fight with. The vast majority of people can run Linux and never miss anything. If you bought Vista for the eyecandy, Linux will do things that make Vista look like DOS. Linux is free, easy, and doesn't waste all your computer's resources. Linux demo |

One of these Or you can also dl zoomplayer and the CCCP codec from Free-Codecs - that or (VLC) plays everything I watch, and there is a lot of weird anime coding out there. edit: you will find no bragging of me pwning all your Page 2 |
