I'm in the market for a receiver. I was looking at the DSA models. Do I go with a type I or type II? What is the difference? Thanks

A few lighting cuts and carry handle option.

If you DON'T want it carry handle cut, go Type I.

If you DO want it carry handle cut, go Type II.

Both type 1's and 2's can be had with or without carry handle cuts from DSA

ETA: I stand corrected. The DSA web site says type 2's are not available Without the carry handle cut. I have 2 from DSA and always just assumed it was or was not available on either.

Can I go with the carry handle version and not install it? They are all the same price. Otherwise, they are all the same? Are there any other preferred brands like the Imbel?

Yea They make a little washer to fill it in or just leave it open.

DSA and Imbel are the best receivers.

Imbels are usually type 3, and heavier than the DSA receivers. They're also getting rare and just as expensive as DSA.

Yep, like axarob44 said, they just use a washer in the cut.

Other than that the Type II has a "few" lightening cuts the Type I doesn't have but you'll never notice.

Imbels are harder to find and probably not any better than DSA. Keep in mind the DSA counts as a US part and a Imbel will not.

I used an Entreprise Receiver for my build.  Some have had problems with them but mine went together with minor fitting.

For an Americvan hobbiest, the only difference between a Type 1 and Type 2 receiver is cosmetic.

The purpose for the development of the type 2 receiver was to correct a cracking problem that the type 1 receivers had when they were fired in full automatic for extended periods of time. The type 2 left a little more metal in the critical area and the problem disappeared.

For the hobbiest that is building a semi auto only variant, it is a non issue.

I pick up my type 2 receiver next Friday (damn 10 day wait).  I have already inspected it and hand timed the barrel, and it definitely lives up to my expectations.  I got it for $325, but DSA recently raised the dealer price to $350.  You should also expect a wait, I ordered mine on 12/28 it arrived at the dealer in early February.  Unfortunately, I did not know that it had arrived (it sat there at the gun store for a week or so) and only found that it was there from the charge on the credit card bill!  After seeing this, I called the dealer and sure enough, they had my receiver with my name on the packing slip.  I was surprised because I emailed DSA a month after I ordered it (late January) and they said it would be about 5 weeks.  Somehow, it shipped a week after they said this and I did not receive a notification by phone or email.

If you want one faster, and you don't care if it has a carrying handle cut or not, you can probably just tell them to send whatever is available first (type 1 with cut, type 1 without cut, or type 2 with cut.)

All these parts have been waiting for a home for at least a month now...I was starting to lose it (as shown by the backwards carrying handle):

Enterprise has a friendlier price. DSA's website shows a price of $449. How did you get one for 350?

The dealer price on DSA receivers was $325, and is now $350.  Your dealer has to call them and authorize you to order at his price.  IIRC, they also offer this price to FALfiles members.  If you can find a dealer to do the transfer, you should still be able to get it for under 400 total, or maybe even under $375 (at least outside of CA where  mythical $20 transfers seem to exist ).

The wait time on DSA receivers will depend on how many complete rifles they have on backorder as complete rifles are their first priority.

Example... if they have 100 rifles on backorder and they get 100 receivers in, they might use 90 of them for rifles and sell the other 10 as stripped receivers. Or, they just might use all 100 to build complete rifles.

If anyone thinks there's a wait for DSAs, try ordering one of the NODAK/DCI type 2 receiver.
There are people who have been on the wait list for a year before they got their receiver.

I lucked out and got a DCI for $350.00 on Gunbroker (I could have waited a year and paid something like $250.00- $275.00),  and it's a really nice piece of work.
The only difference is that the DCI is cast instead of forged like the DSA.

I just hammered the last part into my rifle two days ago. DS Arms Type 2 which accounted for pretty much half the cost of the rifle, not counting optic. It gets a baptism over the weekend.

Can't say about the DSA receivers, but the original FN Type 2 added some beefed up points in certain areas of the receiver and was an improvement over the Type 1. I believe this was done to prevent cracks that were appearing w/ Type 1 receivers when under heavy use.

I just ordered a DSA (any kind available) and they told me 4-6 weeks. Also got it at $350.00. I am number 1010 for a Coonan. Harlan said they they aren't getting much help from DCI so the receivers are slow arriving. I'm also on the list for an Entreprise, so hope to hear from them in March. Slim pickins out there right now, so i would snatch up what you can get.

Who has decent FAL kits? Any STG kits left?

Here is a picture that should help.  Avoid Entreprise like the plague.  They say all receivers require gunsmithing for proper fit.  The receivers wouldn't lock up because they cut the locking lug too deep.  The feed ramps weren't cut right and locking shoulder hole was crooked.  I sent them back twice and their "gunsmiths" said that nothing was wrong with them.  Eventually I got a refund and they resold the receivers.

There are STG kits available, but you'd probably have to get them from a private seller.  Expect to pay $325-400.
