My cousin farms and I help him as much as I can with his computer stuff.

He asked me about finding some good software to use to keep his business records, and other farm related info, like equipment maint, parts purchases, seed purchases, etc.

Of course, I told him I knew exactly where to go to find another farmer to ask

Well, anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks from a Virginia Farmer!

If he's running a real farm then he needs to go to his accountant and ask him what software he needs to use.

My parents farm and have software that tracks most of what they do.  It came from their accountant that does their taxes.  Taxes for farming are very complicated based on everything you just described plus many more items.  Trying to do it by yourself is just plain crazy.  Now if he is running just a hobby farm and only buys a few things here or there then that could probably be managed by someone on their own.

Thanks! He is the 3rd generation farmer here and not only farms this family (1,000 acre+) farm where we live but also rents tons of other farms around the county. He does his own taxes and I swear I don't know where he gets the energy to do it all but he does.

Do you know the software your parents are using?

I do most of my stuff the old way, a pencil and paper. Although my accountant is going to start keeping my books from now on. The old man does the same thing.

I was having significant trouble keeping track of my books and then I found it.  The best farm software I'd ever seen.

It's called

COWculator 1.5

It has done wonders to boost my herd and now I have a "bullish" outlook for 2007.

COWculator seems to be primarily for beef. We do not raise beef, just soy beans, corn and peanuts.

Is COWculator appilcable to these products too?

Do you have a link please?

www.iowafarmbusiness.org/pcmarsaccounting.html ???

Figure out what's needed for taxes and good records, and go from there.

There's also some kind of Quicken / Quickbooks module.

you may want to check out Peachtree accounting software.

it's a massive and well built accounting software suite which may be able to handle your needs.

(disclaimer: i'm not a farmer or accountant)

SST Software

That may not be exactly what he is needing, but I know that outfit is the big fish in the precision ag pond. . .

ETA:  Holler at me via email/pm if you need more info on them. . .
