Not sure how this works.

But if an item has a bid only of say $1.  And you are willing to pat $20, you enter $20 and the amount will show you as the winning bid of $1.50 until someone bids higher, say $2, and the system will automatically show your bid at $2.50.  This will happen until $20 is passed?

thats how it works, for both,

on ebay someone can run your bid up, so i always bid late,

not around when the auction goes off?????

try esnipe.com,

bids for you, 1-2 seconds before it goes off,

some people hate it,

but it is damn convienent when you are working etc at the time the auction ends!!!

Why dont you just bid what ever the maxium you  are willing  to pay for it. Some people just get into trying to win an auction they sit and keep bidding and eventually the good deal they think they are getting does not exist becuase they bid themselves into a frenzy
