Anti-war protesters spray paint Capitol building
By Jackie Kucinich

Anti-war protesters were allowed to spray paint on part of the west front steps of the United States Capitol building after police were ordered to break their security line by their leadership, two sources told The Hill.

According to the sources, police officers were livid when they were told to fall back by U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) Chief Phillip Morse and Deputy Chief Daniel Nichols.  "They were the commanders on the scene," one source said, who requested anonymity. "It was disgusting."

After police ceded the stairs, located on the lower west fron tof the Capitol, the building was locked down, the source added.

A second source who witnessed the incident said that the police had the crowd stopped at Third Street, but were told to bring the police line in front of the Capitol.

Approximately 300 protesters were allowed to take the steps and began to spray paint "anarchist symbols" and phrase such as "Our  capitol building" and "you can’t stop us" around the area, the source said.

Morse responded to these claims in an e-mail Sunday afternoon, explaining that the protesters were seeking confrontation with the police.

"While there were minor instances of spray painting of pavement by a splinter group of Anarchists who were seeking a confrontation with the police, their attempts to breach into secure areas and rush the doors of the Capitol were thwarted," Morse said. "The graffiti was easily removed by the dedicated [Architect of the Capitol] staff, some ofwhom responded on their day off to quickly clean the area."

He added, "It is the USCP's duty and responsibility to protect the Capitol complex, staff and public while allowing the public to exercise their First Amendment rights … at the end of the day, both occurred without injury to protestors or officers."

Yet, the sources who talked to The Hill were furious that protesters were not stopped before reaching the Capitol.

"To get that close to the Capitol building, that is ridiculous," the second source said. "[Police] were told not to arrest anyone."

The second source added that police had to stand by and watch as protesters posed in front of their graffiti.

Tens of thousands of people rallied on the Mall and the Capitol complex Saturday in protest of the increased troop deployments and the war in Iraq.

No Arrests means less complaints...  Wecome to what we like to call "Passive Policing".  The gist is that you don't do anything and therefore you don't piss anyone off and don't make any mistakes.  If you do something, you will make someone mad and give the armchair experts something to criticize...so you do nothing.   Drive slow to a call...suspect is gone by the time you get there....ect.  No confrontations, no arrests, no problems.  It is a sad state of affairs...

You need to look no further than any of the LE threads on this site to see why passive policing exists.

So no one's rights got violated?  How about the rights of the caretakers who had to come in on their day off to clean up some inconsiderate assholes' mess?

Sorry, your right to free speech does not include damaging or defacing public property.

So does this mean I can finally go spray a black eyepatch onto 'ol Honest Abe?

Check out the web page of the US Capitol Police: www.uscapitolpolice.gov/home.php

"Wear the Badge, Feel the Honor." Yeah, right.

The politicians who made the call to surrender the steps and make the cops watch dirtbags deface them should be ridden out of town on a rail. I suggest the rail that the Amtrak Acela runs out of Union Station on, but that's just me...

People confuse RIGHTS & PRIVLEDGES!

You DO NOT have the right to Deface property & it would be my Priveledge to crack your skull!

If they hate our country so much leave.
Don't even get me started on flag burning...........

"We the sensible people of the United States, in an attempt to help everyone

get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid more riots, keep our

nation safe, promote positive behavior, and secure the blessings of

debt-free liberty to ourselves and our great-great- great-grandchild ren,

hereby try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense

guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt ridden, delusional, and other

bed-wetters.

We hold these truths to be self evident: that a whole lot of people are

confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim they require a Bill of

NON-Rights."

ARTICLE I:

You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV, or any other form of

wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them, but No one is

guaranteeing anything.

ARTICLE II:

You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is Based on

freedom, and that means freedom for everyone -- not just you! You may leave

the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc.; But the world

is full of idiots, and probably always will be.

ARTICLE III:

You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick a screwdriver

in your eye, learn to be more careful, do not expect the tool Manufacturer

to make you and all your relatives independently wealthy.

ARTICLE IV:

You do not have the right to free food and housing. Americans are the most

charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone in need, but we

are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generation after generation of

professional couch potatoes who achieve nothing more than the Creation of

another generation of professional couch potatoes. (This one is my pet

peeve...get an education and go to work .. don't expect everyone else to

take care of you!)

ARTICLE V:

You do not have the right to free health care. That would be nice, but from

the looks of public housing, we're just not interested in public health

care.

ARTICLE VI:

You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If you kidnap,

rape, intentionally maim, or kill someone, don't be surprised if the rest of

us want to see you fry in the electric chair.

ARTICLE VII:

You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If you rob, cheat,

or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens, don't be surprised

if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place where you still

won't have the right to a big screen color TV or a life of leisure.

ARTICLE VIII:

You do not have the right to a job. All of us sure want you to have a job,

and will gladly help you along in hard times, but we expect you to take

advantage of the opportunities of education and vocational training laid

before you to make yourself useful. (AMEN!)

ARTICLE IX:

You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American means that you

have the right to PURSUE happiness, which by the way, is a lot easier if you

are unencumbered by an over abundance of idiotic laws created by those of

you who were confused by the Bill of Rights.

ARTICLE X:

This is an English speaking country. We don't care where you are from,

English is our language. Learn it or go back to wherever you came from!

(lastly....)  MY PET PEEVE

ARTICLE XI:

You do not have the right to change our country's history or heritage. This

country was founded on the belief in God. And yet, you are given the freedom

to believe in any religion, any faith, or no faith at all; with no fear of

persecution. The phrase IN GOD WE TRUST is part of our heritage and history,

and if you are uncomfortable with it, TOUGH!!!!

Will the police be ordered to fall back when the growing muslim population marches on DC demanding that sharia law become the law of the land in the US???

I am a BIG supporter of freedom of speech, I feel that the 2nd amendment is in place to protect the first amendment. So I guess you could say I support the rights of stinky, pachouli smelling hippies to protest the war, the president, whatever.

When you start breaking things and defacing national monuments, your right to get your skull cracked by a riot cop comes into play.

Wonder what would happen to me if I, as a white guy, defaced a Martin Luther King Jr memorial??*

* I have nothing against Dr King or what he stood for, just using it as an example...

Gee, and the Left wonders why D.C. is the crime capital of the nation.

You are allowed to drive drunk and crash your car into a police barricade at 1:00am and get not even a ticket but instead get a free ride home by the DC police.

You are allowed to punch a DC police officer in the chest if they try to stop you bypassing a Capitol Hill security checkpoint - and again get away without even a ticket.

You are allowed to march up the steps of the US Capitol and vandalize the grounds of Congress in broad daylight with DC police standing there impotently watching you - and nothing happens to you.

Yes, you are allowed to do all that - if you are a Leftist.

Of course if you are a law-abiding citizen trying to help law enforcement by looking out for illegal foreign invaders at the border, you're branded a racist-vigilante-domestic-terrorist and are specifically threatened and targetted by the full force of the US gov't.

Sometimes ya' just want to say fuck it - let it all come down.

On the one hand, this kind of shit pisses me off to no end, these little shit stains getting away with this sort of nonsense. On the other hand, you have it taken to the other extreme, such as the Bonus March where troops tear-gassed and opened fire on peaceful protesters and then burned their camp.

I think we can find a safe middle ground where we just smack hippies over the head with blunt instruments and spray them with OC when they get uppity.
