I just found out, after 18 years of driving, that yellow speed limit signs are 'advisory' not 'regulatory' like the white ones.  I know plenty of people who have gotten tickets for going over the speed on a yellow sign while exiting the freeway.

Has anyone ever fought a ticket for this and won?

It is a suggested speed, and local law enforcement suggest you do it!!!!!

Never gotten a ticket for it but if I do there may be some ammo in your statements if true..

It is true that the yellow signs are suggested speeds.

ETA: At least in the state where I live.

Depending on your state, you might be exceeding the safe speed  thus you can still get a ticket.  Especially if the sign is in a work zone.

Yellow speed limit signs are IIRC a suggested "safe speed".

Orange speed limit signs are construction signs.  You HAVE to obey them or you'll get a ticket, and they double fines in my state.

Yellow signs can be ignored

White ones are regulatory and matter

The police state can of course always give you a "too fast for conditions" ticket

But, the yellow signs aren't anything but advisory.

"Too fast for conditions" is usually given when you're speeding but the cop is feeling nice and doesn't want to give you an actual speeding ticket.  At least around here.

It may be different where you are from, but here in SC a yellow sign is enforceable as posted. It is not a "suggested" safe speed, but more like a "local caution" in some forms of racing. In other words, the speed limit is 55 on this road, but its 10mph in this 90 degree curve.

If the Accident Reconstruction guys figure you were exceeding the yellow sign and your speed contributed to your accident, you can also get a TFFC... or a Reckless Driving.

Tickets for the yellow signs get issued after accidents where you failed to comply with the suggested speed reduction and an accident resulted.

How did you happen to finally realize this fact after two decades of driving?

P.S...NYs DMV booklet is online somewhere..you might want to review it if THAT came as a surprise to you.

Actually, I was in TX most of that time.  Just moved to NY recently.  Never saw it in the TX drivers manual though

On speeding in work zones, the fine is double ONLY if there are workers present.  Still, you shouldn't get too carried away in work zones (IMO) like they do in southern california.  They hall butt through them.

Suggested speed here too, but on my roads you generally follow what the sign says

If I remember my freshman physics class correctly, those yellow signs tell you the speed that an object would make it through the turn with NO friction between the road and the object.  (Turns are banked)  The mass of whatever is going through the turn cancels out of the equation.

Unless you have ZERO friction, the "suggested" speed is way low.

They're usually on freeway exit ramps...
