I want to run a credit report to see if I have any open credit cards with the various department stores.  Will the credit report from Equifax show that info?

You need all 3. Some creditors don't report to all 3 agencies, and they don't share info. w/ each other either. That's one reason all three scores will be different.

When you run your report you want to make sure it pulls from all 3 bureaus. You might want to check in to see, sometimes the free ones don't do all 3. Then you want to subscribe to a monitoring system ($9-10.00@month). They monitor for many different things for you. I've had one for years & like it....FWIW

So, will a 3 bureau report show all of my active credit accounts?  I'm wondering if there isn't a JCPenny card or Sears card lurking in my past long after the card was cut to shreads.

Not necessarily, but they will show all accounts that have been reportrd to them (the CRA).

The ONLY truly "FREE" one does indeed pull all three.... or you can pull 1 at a time.

All the other "free" ones are scams that sell you a product.

I respectfully disagree, but to each their own.  I'd rather put $10 a month in my savings account... in a few years I have several hundred dollars.... the value of "monitoring" your credit isnt worth it unless you are constantly getting consumer loans and this would be cheaper than you pulling and inspecting your own credit reports constantly.

There is a great thread on credit in general, and pulling your reports and scores:
