I am looking to buy an AR upper half. The options for the barrel are chrome lined (which is more expensive) or chrome moly. Is there a big difference, and is there someone who can explain the benefits of one or the other? Thanks for the help.

Chrome moly is a type of steel while chrome lining is a type of coating. The chrome barrel is still made from a chrome molly steel, but the bore is chrome lined also. If you can afford it, spring for the chrome lined barrel.

Just spend the $$$ on the chrome. By the time you finish researching and have a better understanding you'll want it.

But why is the chrome lined bore better?

Quoted: But why is the chrome lined bore better?
It will not rust, and erosion of the throats is slower due to the hard properties of teh chrome. But accuracy will suffer due to the coating (not true for all but the ar/ak series this holds true).
