Was just thinking about a good solution for a suppressed rifle and was wondering if anyone ever made a rifle with a manually actioned bolt that could be switched to semi auto also?

other than some shotguns  i have never seen one

How about a gas regulator that can be shut off for use with a suppressor instead.

I asked about keeping the bolt closed on a 10/22 for my suppressor and was told by quite a few people that I could just hold the bolt closed with my thumb.  They appeared to be serious, but this is ARFCOM .  So I used a wooden dowel to keep the bolt closed on some shots.

With Sub sonic ammo and my SWR Warlock, I really did not notice much of a difference.

I have seen that with some SMG's. And I think some pistols.

Well, the FAL and the M14 type rifles can switch the gas off to stop the action fron cycling.

However that was for using rifle grenades.

the gas regulators can be shut off on the FAL rifles too, essentially making them a "bolt action".

this is one of the reasons i've always though these rifles would be sweet for suppressed use.

ETA: damn, beaten to the punch...

Very true. Also by changing the gas port bushing on a Mini-14 you can do this. (Ohs teh noes!!!)

Are there any of the new gas piston AR uppers equiped with a valve o shut the gas off?

the yugoslavian m70 AK also has this feature.

An ar15 with a modded gas block or tube will do this.. But why?
1/3/2007 6:23:12 AM EDT
[#13]
Just get an adjustable gas block / gas tube.

Really? I got one and never knew it could do this! How do you engage it? By flipping up the grenade sight?

Just shuting off the gas on adjustable systems means you have to cycle the action with the CH and it's certainly no bolt lever.  Cases can get kinda sticky so I imagine that is a recipe for a frustrating range session.

The bolts on the M14 and the Ar both rotate to lock and unlock the same way the bolt actions work.

FAL won't, not sure about the AK.

You want a Special Weapons SW5. It's a semi auto that works like a bolt action.

The Daewoo DR200 has a gas system that can be shut off as well.

You can unscrew the nut on an M1 Garand easily enough. You could go from semi to single shot in about 5 seconds.

Pretty much any semiauto can be given an 'adjustable gas system' including a 'proper' DI AR... The 'OFF' setting would basically give you a straight-pull bolt gun...

However, WHY would you want to turn off the gas? Does it make the gun any quieter apart from the lack of moving-parts-noise (which would be made when you rack the next round)?

Because the loudest thing on a well suppressed weapon is the action.

I can't believe no one has said a Yugo 59/66 SKS yet.  There is a button for the grenade launcher that shuts off the gas tube which turns it into a single shot STRAIGHT PULL bolt action.  Flip it down again and bumpfire your 9 remaining rounds.

Any SKS. Take out the gas piston.
While hunting in Pa. (years ago) semi's aren't legal. So the old guy takes the gas piston/rod out, and made the rifle a straight pull. He got his deer and stayed out of jail. After that I bought my first SKS ($89 otd)

My springfield .22 has its charging handle on the bolt.  You keep the handle pulled out and its a semi, push it in and its a single shot.  You can also pull it all the way back and push the handle in and it will lock the bolt back.
