Well, my truck got broken into last night, took my DVD player and iPod worth about $1500. Now I'm considering getting some cameras for the exterior of the house and tying them into the server I have setup at home. Has anyone done this? Though I'd ask before I do my home work.

I was thinking a camera for each corner with one aimed at the front entry for a total of five and work in conjunction with a motion sensing flood light. All should be tied into my server doing 24x7 monitoring and storage would be a 320GB HDD archived on a monthly basis. Preferrbly wireless. remote access from a web browser would be cool too. If anyone has a similar setup, let me know what you have!

EDIT: Here's the link to the truck thread www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=8&f=10&t=253591

Talk to SWIRE. Also do a search for his thread about catching some punk trying to break into his car using a system just like you describe.

Are you looking for a system too? I just got off the phone with a buddy of mine, I just found out he has 3 cameras on the exterior of his house tied into his TV cable system. Said he can tune to channel 116 and view the cameras.

I'm trying to find something web based. I think I have a pretty good start, I'll let you know what I decide on

Well, here's what I got.. Home Depot special

http://www.securitymaninc.com/product/outdoorwatch.html

I figured this and some new motion sensor lights will do the job. I was looking at the 4 camera systems but I don’t think I really needed all of them, all I really need is something to watch over the driveway.

I plan on attaching it to my PC/Server using a TV card and having the software record images every few seconds or so and uploading it to a web server where I can access it anywhere via web browser. Just like other live web cams. I'll let you know guys know when I get it up and running.

For added measure and to compensate for my laziness I got a few timer switches to turn the motion lights on during the night and off in the morning, I also got a timer for my outdoor garage lights and front porch. I think the main deterrent is going to be the  lights. I got heavy duty ones that have a detection range of 100ft.

The moral of the story is, although it would have been cool to have cameras everywhere, it wouldnt have been very practical. The main objective is to keep the lights on at appropriate times and keep them/theives from even coming onto my property and making them think twice before attempting anything like this again.
