I see guys who have served in Iraq referring to "OIF I" and "OIF II", and I just saw someone referring to "OIF 05-07".  What do the I and II refer to?  Different tours when they were there?  05-07?  Lil' help, please.

Operation Enduring Freedom is what I thought it was.  But that would be OEF.  So I guess tag for answer.

I was there during OIF I and OIF II/III.

OIF I was the Invasion and ground war.  I left and came back a year later and was told it was the end of OIF II and the beginning of OIF III.

Okay, I can see OIF I as being the invasion and ground war, maybe up to the fall of Baghdad or something.  But what are the other "OIF" demarcations for?

I'm guessing every fiscal year starts a new OIF phase.  Probably for scheduling troop rotations.

every year.

OIF 1...1st year

OIF 2...2nd year

etc, etc.

OIF 5-07 is OIF 5...in 2007

Bingo!  OIF I-invasion/follow on forces; OIF II-replacements; OIF III-replacement replacements; etc...

That's how I understand it.  I was there for OIF III, Feb-Sep 2005, and people were starting to call it OIF 4-6 and different combinations of numbers.  Even we on the ground were confused by the numbering.  With regard to OEF, Operation Enduring Freedom is the overall Global War on Terror with which the President received the funding for OIF.  I'm a Reservist, and my activation orders for Iraq say "Operation Enduring Freedom", because like the funding, OEF authorized the call up of the Reserves.
