Over and over, same mistake... BOARDERS are people trying to capture a ship, like PIRATES... BORDERS are boundaries between political entities like COUNTRIES.... |
I’m afraid that I’m going to have to throw in with the OP here. I would have employed a comma also, indicating an ellipsis, rather than a semicolon which is employed to join two independent clauses. edited for typo |
I tell ya what, I learned to type and program on a Commodore 64, and if I have to see one more "Syntax Error" I'm gonna go out and kill a puppy. |
|
Their all dumbasses who should of payed attention in school and not taken it for granite. (Several of my personal spelling pet peeves included above). PS It just occurred to me that many posters will probably not find any mistakes - if that's you go back to school! |
Well, since I passed typing 18 years before the Commodore 64 was invented, syntax means something different to me. But, I feel your pain. At least no kittens will die over this. |

Hey, not all of us are in Daddies basement. Some of us are in Daddies attic or the spare room. j/k |
So, you decide to insult me without thinking WHY I have a problem with language and grammar. Nice! I have a disability that made it hard for me to learn to read and write the english language. I spent about nine years of my life working with tutors to bring me up to a basic (about 8th grade) reading/writing level. This was pretty much each week. So, I still get common gramatical and spelling mistakes wrong. I still cannot speak many complicated words. I still have trouble thinking and speaking at the same time (I jump ahead alot when trying to think and talk). Yes, I use tools to help me but they are not 100% accurate (and they require I can understand what is wrong). |
I kinda figured that's what you were getting at. I was just implying that muzzle brakes are meant to reduce recoil vs. slowing down bullets. |
Just out of curiosity, what makes you think he was out to insult you specifically? We had a guy that worked for us and for some reason he could not spell "WIRE", it always was written as "WIER" I have corrected him on many occasions to realize that he had a writing issue. A helluva technician but his writing skills were a problem. |

Interesting site... wsu.edu/~brians/errors/errors.html#errors |
I know he did not intend to insult anyone specifically, but he did make a blanket statement that anyone who cannot spell and use correct grammar is a dumbass that should have given more attention to school and if so needed to go back to school. I was trying to point out that some people have, even with alot of schooling, a problem using correct spelling and grammar. And, no matter what kind of schooling you receive it cannot be corrected. |
People with honest-to-god learning disabilities are in the vast minority, most people who can't spell or use proper grammar are just lazy or uneducated. What I don't understand is the people that get indignant when you point out an error, like it's their god-given right to make themselves look ignorant. To me, it's the same thing as a buddy quietly telling you your fly is down.. we're just trying to help keep you from looking bad. |

I hate how so many people improperly use apostrophes. People! There is only ONE situation where you use an apostrophe to form a plural, and that is forming plurals of single lowercase letters! Not for abbreviations, not for numbers, not for capital letters, and goddamn sure not for plurals of standard words. Example: "Dot your i's and cross your t's." This is acceptable. But: "Dot your I's and cross your T's," "I was born in the late 1960's (or '60's)," "I like to collect rifle's," "All the ATM's are broken," and the like are MURDER OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. The same with the phrase "gramer nazi's." It is true that the apostrophe is used to show possession, but it is NEVER used for a possessive pronoun. NEVER. Thus, all the following are absolutely incorrect: "Your's, their's, our's, her's." "It's" deserves a special section. "Its" is used as the possessive pronoun for "it." "It's" is ONLY used for "it is" or "it has." I also have a problem with the rampant capitalization issues. We aren't writing German. There is no need to capitalize every noun, and especially not every word, and especially not every letter. For that matter, the shift keys are fairly hard to miss; there is no need to leave all words completely lowercase. Only capitalize, and always capitalize: -The first letter of every sentence. -Proper nouns (the names of a person, group or organization, place, or brand name, or the like). -The pronoun "I." You may also capitalize to provide emphasis, but bold or italic text are also acceptable and, in many cases, preferred. Don't even get me started on periods, commas, semicolons, colons, and paragraphs. Please, people, stop killing our language. |

It matters, especially when you talk tech about sumthin' or start quotin' numbers. Say some guy is yakkin' about 922 stuff and his sentenve goes like: "...the ATF sez you can tput a different stock on that particular..." Did he accidentally hit the "T" key or was he intentionally tryin' to say "can't"? This kind of grammar can only lead to mistakes by the recipient. Some will say let it be, but when it comes to law or firearms I say differently. t |
I would hardly call my accomidations 'Daddy's basement' Uncle Sam's Closet, maybe.... |
| I sometimes do not use the spell check if I am in a hurry, so I might drop a h in the or what not. But when I see a poster not know to use 'too' instead of 'to' or 'boarders' instead of 'borders' or 'breaks' instead of brakes, etc, it prompts me to completely discount what the poster has to say. I guess I figure if you are too stupid to know basic English spelling and grammar, what does that say about your other knowledge bases? Check out the survival forum for some real wild eyed gibberish. |
