I have a Vermont Castings woodstove (cast iron) and some rust has developed on the top where my bride has been placing a pan of water to humidify the air.

What's the best way to get rid of this? I know on my cast iron pans I use oil to season them. Is this the best bet? I don't want to create a house full of smoke by doing something stupid.

Thanks.

I spray mine with WD-40 and use paper towels to wipe it off.

Then I spay with hi temp flat black paint to touch it up
