I have had a Target card for 11 years now and have had the same crappy $200 limit. They wont increase it. So, woujld I be better off keeping it open cause of the long history or going ahead and closing it?

I don't like store-specific credit cards.

I'd say it was stolen/lost.

Then close it.

The fact that you have a $200 dollar limit and are asking for financial advice on the internet is not lost on me.

Close it. Only use "store" cards if you want to make a big purchase and the incentives are there. Then close it the next month.

I've had my target card since I was 18, not eleven years, but what the hell. Anyway, they upped my limit from $200 to $1000 before I turned 19, and just last year turned it into a Visa card with a $5000 limit.

But for your situation, $200 in a store specific card isn't exactly qualifying it as an OH SHIT BUG OUT credit card, so can it.

I'm cancelling it though since I just got a Macy's Elite Visa, due to my extreme spending there

What can you buy for $200 at Target?

So, no one knows the answer?

Keep open cause of long history or better to close?

Closing that long history account will affect your credit score in a negative way.

Keep it open & just don't use the card

+1 unless you have another credit account that has been open for almost as long.

If you always pay off in full, try running a small balance for a month-it might get increased because CC companies love to help you dig if you're already in a hole.

I base this on our Sears MC card-paid off in full for years, run a balance for one month, credit limit of $1200 was raised to $3000.

The company that manages/issues the Target card (begins with an "R") has the worst track record this side of CapitolOne.

Dump it and if you want a CC, then get is with MBNA/BofA or another company that won't shaft you.

You need to go in and talk to customer service. The Target card is different than the Target Visa. If you have decent credit you should get them to transfer  you to the Target visa your limit will increase dramatically and you will still have your history. They get more points for having people on this card, this is why they won't up your limit on the other one. I switched from Target card to Target Visa got a lower interest rate and now I have a 7,000 limit. Just somthing to think about.
