| Jim paddles from one shore of a lake three miles wide at 4 mph, and John paddles from the opposite shore at 5 mph. How long will they travel before they meet? |
|
Jim travels at 4x. John travels at 5x. Combined, they travel towards themselves at 9x. Lake is three miles wide so x being the time means they meet at 1/3 hour or 20 minutes. Distance traveled is 1/3*rate, for Jim that is 4/3 mile. John travels 5/3 mile. Together, they travel 9/3 miles, or 3 miles. |
Have I mentioned lately you got a purty mouth? |
